Would You Like To See More 20mph Speed Limits? A WAB Debate

Tuesday April 8 2014

A SURVEY has claimed that the 'overwhelming majority' of people want to see 20mph speed limits being introduced around schools and town centres. What do you think to this? Are you in favour?

Conducted by road charity Brake, its survey found 78 per cent of people wanted to see tougher restrictions around built-up areas - particularly near schools and busy town centres.

A Department for Transport spokesman said that any changes to local speed limits were a matter for local councils.

Council leader Sir Steve Houghton said: "The council is keen to embrace this and considering the introduction of 20mph speed limits will require support from the local community, the police and other local services.

"Clearly any decision to introduce 20mph speed limit schemes will have financial implications and it will be essential to ensure that the necessary funding is available before any schemes can be introduced."

Would you like to see slower speed limits being introduced across Barnsley? Have your say below.

Why not improve how people are taught to cross a road instead of taking the easy route and blaming/penalising motorists all the time. It's not hard to look before you step out!

Yes definitely 20mph limits are great. Wide area limits are safer, greener, help people to walk and cycle more, better for business. See www.20splentyforus.org.uk for more.

they should up the speed limit on the motorway to 80 that speed limit 70 is so out dated.more bike lanes encourage people to leave the car at home.how are they going to enforce 20 mph the only way would be for the goverment and local councils to grow some and if youre caught speeding crush the car ,you wont have to crush many before message sinks in.

A good idea I'm all for it but just how many of you drivers have been driving along only for some numpty with. Earphones in walk out in to the middle of the road with our a care in the world and when you try to show them the errors of there ways you get the two fingered salute and a load of abuse

Im a teenager myself and some times I see little kids running across roads like nothing drives on it but I dont think there should change the speed limit cause adults with kids should be able to teach them how to cross the road without getting hit

If the adults cant teach them then there should atleast be lollipop woman or man tokeep the kids safe after school

Yes!! But only around schools, the people who speed past ours and don't use their indicators is appalling, , care and consideration , the pedestrian has right of way, even though they are sometimes negligent but what if it was one of your loved ones who got hit??

I think it's a good idea. All residential areas should have 20mph limits, not just schools and town centres.
