Theatre Asks For Audience Feedback

Tuesday March 25 2014

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A THEATRE is opening their doors to ask its audience how they can safeguard their future.

Dearne Playhouse, built in 1924 and originally the Miners' Welfare Hall, was officially opened in 2006 after receiving funding from the Arts Council for a £1 million renovation.

A spokesperson from the theatre said: "We're keen to ensure that the venue can continue to support local amateur theatre groups, host touring shows and provide music workshops for young people."

Audience members past and present are being asked to provide their suggestions on what they would like to see at an event at the theatre from 6.30pm on April 2.

Never heard of the place. Maybe a bit of advertising? Or has the place passed me by? Where is it?

Hi anon, the theatre is in Goldthorpe, it is a beautiful 380 seat theatre that has been open since 1923. The theatre was refurbished in 2006 and our patron is Brian Blessed. We are full almost every week of the year with all kinds of shows but we are looking to make our programme more diverse and would like peoples opinions of what they would like to see. We rarely advertise as most of the shows have a ready made audience, also we are a registered charity and up to now have had no advertising budget. We need to know what kind of events people would want to come and see, other than what we put on now. I hope to see you at the open evening.

Thanks for that Julie. How do we find out what's on? Do you have a website with events? Sounds like I'm missing out.

Thanks julie. I have just loooked at your site. What about a comedy club event?
Last week I tried to get tickets to 3 little pigs ballet for 3yrs olds from the civic, but it was sold out. Ok, I thought ballet? but it was a half hour show,so just long enough for the tots. It was obviously popular hence tickets being sold out. Also there is a wonderful dramal group thats involved with RSPB, they do plays etc and they are fantastic. Maybe they could do something with you?

Schools hardy ever do theatre trips now - but if you asked then what they wanted they might come - it would be lovely to do mice and men and whichever shakespeare they are doing now - the kids never get to actually see shakespeare - but when you see it, it makes so much more sense.
