Student Gears Up For Musical Marathon

Tuesday March 25 2014

A MUSIC student from Barnsley is hoping to break a world record for completing the fastest marathon while playing in a marching band.

Cathryn Rogers, 20, of Oakwell Court, will have to play her piccolo for at least seven hours when she takes on the London Marathon in April.

The world record is seven hours 22 minutes and 55 seconds, set by German band Musikverein, but now the Huddersfield Marathon Band and Cathryn are after their title.

Cathryn, who is in her final year at the University of Huddersfield, said: "As part of the rules, we can't have more than a 30-second break between each piece of music, and the drums have got to keep going throughout.

"We can repeat pieces, but we've got to have a two-hour programme of music."

The event is raising money for Sense, a charity which supports children and adults who are deafblind.
