THERE has been an increase in people attending an MP's surgery after getting into financial trouble through gambling.

It comes after We Are Barnsley revealed that more than £6 million had been frittered away in the town's bookies.

Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis, whose ward has the biggest problem with over £2m being lost, said he had seen an increase in the number of people needing help.

"I've heard some terrible stories of people going hungry because money that was put aside for food has been gambled away," he said.

Mr Jarvis added that the problem was made worse by people then going to pay day lenders and borrowing money at an extortionate rate of interest.

"If people want to gamble in a responsible way that's fine. But increasingly in my surgery I've seen an indication that it creates very significant problems for people and their families.

"We need to make sure that when people get into difficulties there is help there for them."

If people are thick enough to gamble all they money away then tough. Anyone with 1/2 an ounce of brain knows full well there is only one winner in gambling and that is "THE BOOKIES" it's mugs game. They are so quick to tell you how much they have won but never tell how much they have lost.
Some people just need to get their priorities in order instead of mobile phone, alcohol and sigs why not try food, bills and work transport cost. Simple

People have to take responsibility for their betting aswell. Stop shifting the blame to the bookies and force people to take responsibility for themselves too! They know how much they can afford to spend so isn't it partly their fault for the amount of money they put in the machines!
