Town Hall Museum Celebrates 100,000th Visitor

Tuesday March 11 2014

THE 100,000th visitor to Experience Barnsley has received a special gift to commemorate the occasion.

Jennifer Crump, from Hoyland, took a trip to the museum - based inside Barnsley Town Hall - on Friday with her husband Brian and grandson Henry.

Jennifer and Brian returned to the museum on Monday to receive a special prize kindly donated by Wortley Hall - an overnight stay including dinner and breakfast.

A council spokesman said: "The culture offer in Barnsley has been extremely successful and to have so many people visit Experience Barnsley in such a short period of time is testament to just how popular and well-loved the museum is."

Nice to see folk are visiting the museum. Something positive for Barnsley. I enjoyed my visit.

just shows it was the right deccision to create a muesium in the town centre in asthetically nice biulding .the landscaping outside has made Barnsley more attractive place to visit.this setts a precedent to make the rest of the centre a nicer place to visit.

Clocking up the 100,000th visit doesn't tell us anything. Could be 1000 people who visited 100 times each, or 1000's of schoolkids who visited because it's a new attraction & had no choice. The museum is only a success when:

a) visitor numbers are high year after year
b) it is attracting visitors to Barnsley who wouldn't have come anyway
c) museum visitors are spending extra money while they are in town (and this more than meets running costs of museum)
d) economic benefits of museum more than meet money that could have been made by using Town Hall for other uses e.g luxury conference or wedding venue

I know i'll be slated for talking about success / failure in cash terms but the museum / town hall fountains / sculpture was sold to us as a way of regenerating the area. It has to pay it's way.
