THREE would-be burglars caught red-handed in Barnsley were arrested, charged and sent to prison within just 30 hours.

The case is thought to be one of the fastest ever turned around by the criminal justice system in the county's history.

Michael Brearley, 27, of South View, Darfield, Gary McManus, 34, of Bridge Street, Barnsley, and Matthew Batley, 31, of no fixed address, were spotted by a member of the public breaking into a shop in Barnsley town centre in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Having checked CCTV, the officers found the three men nearby, their hands full of stolen goods.

They were arrested, interviewed, and charged and by 10am the following day they were sentenced to six months in prison having pleaded guilty to burglary.

The stolen property was returned to the shopkeeper.

Just quite not enough time given to the offenders, another Three Years Hard labour would have looked better,a couple of months in the Holiday Camp won't deter them.?

And probably having spent no time at all near a prison of any kind, and basing your opinions on a tabloid newspaper, you would know all about the 'holiday camps' wouldn't you ?

6 months better than nothing.

Had my workshop broken into about 2 weeks ago in town... was probably them, the roller door was ripped open, and you can see three sets of pull marks where 3 men have obviuosly ripped it open. So i wonder if i can find my stolen goods?

The thing theyre not telling you . is that if this was their 1st offence .. this wouldn't have happened .. theyll be hardened thieving burgling scumbags that do it week in and week out ! It was only because they actually caught them in the act also that they could do it that quick ! 6 months ! ? ! they ll be out in 4 and back burgling the day after !

@Barnsley Truth, having spent time working with ex-offenders and people on probation, many of them do consider it to be a 'holiday camp' and quite enjoy the three square meals, hot shower and meeting up with old mates every now and then. (their words, not mine)

its a miracle Batley got time at all ! He's usually arrested and back out within hours, a few names to the police gets hi
bail and a few quid in his pocket to take his rattle off. But not this time l

These 3 burgle houses and shops daily. They need their hands chopping off because that is the only way they will stop.
