POLICE say a safety cordon around a residential street in Penistone has been reduced and is expected to be lifted later today.

Bomb disposal experts were called to a property on Sheffield Road yesterday after some Second World War memorabilia - thought to be unexploded munitions - was discovered in the property.

Residents were evacuated after officers - who had been called to the address following the report of a sudden death - discovered the munitions.

A police spokesman said: "The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"Some further enquiries are due to be carried out at that property and the cordon is not expected to be fully lifted until later on in the day."

Officers remained on the scene throughout the night, escorting residents back to their homes once the area had been cleared.
