South Yorkshire Police South Yorkshire Police

A GANG of burglars attacked a vulnerable pensioner in Barnsley and stole nearly £13,000 worth of jewellery and cash from his home.

The three raiders are thought to have entered the house on Manor Way, Hoyland, through an insecure window at 4.55am on Thursday morning while the 73-year-old man was asleep.

When the victim awoke, he attempted to confront the trio in his hallway but was restrained by one of the culprits. He was not hurt, but was left shaken by his ordeal.

The offenders took property from the house and a safe including 40 watches worth £6,000, 40 rings worth £4,000, two gold chains valued at a total of £2,000, £800 in cash and bank cards.

One is described as around 5ft 10in tall, stocky and wearing a light-coloured top with a scarf around the lower part of his face. The others were shorter in height, appeared to be in their early twenties, skinny and wearing black hoodies with the hoods up.

Anyone with any information should contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 95 of February 27, 2014. Alternatively people can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

elderly people especially men keep a lot of their jewelry through out their life and usually put it in their will for their family. this isnt uncommon and its a bit ****** that you pretty much just called a poor old man a liar after his ordeal...

You're absolutely right love. Many people from that generation prefer not to keep the money in the bank but in a tangible form, as was much more common in the past to do so.

no other words apart from scum' bring back the birch I say.

The birch wouldn't be a real deterrent though Alan, if they are captured they ought to be sentences to 5 years hard labour, digging drainage ditches by hand should be a good start.
But we all know one the thieving toe rags have cashed the gold in for a fifth of its true price are finally captured they will get a slapped danny and we will see them cutting grass in the local graveyards in our borough.

Your not supposed to have anything in barnsley but when you move as i did you realize that people do have such things as gold . 40 rings is nothing over a lifetime . Here in Melbourne people have a life of luxury with there savings . Whats 40 rings going to get you in retirement these days ...

This man was obviously targeted by people who knew what he has at home. Must be locals, and people will hear about attempts to offload a load of watches. Hope no one covers up for them. Report them & anyone who buys the stolen stuff.

Low life scum, obviously his life savings invested in jewellery and watches, probably some family heirlooms, not a lot for a life's investment and it equates to £3.40 a week for his 73 years, hardly affluent.

Once again scum of the earth who think the world owes them a living and who target a member of the community who has worked and saved all his life, the birch is too good for them, hard labour, lets stop being a nanny state. The real price will be the poor guys health and state of mind after this.

So, once again low-life creeping scum are targeting the vulnerable.
Cowardly actions from cowardly men.

Good luck to the gentleman, hopefully he will be able to put it behind him and get on with his life.

So so sad, this area is just getting worse. The culprits are nothing but cowardly scum.

They catch them, they send them to BUTLINS. TV, snooker, a smoke, a laugh and then back out within months. I agree with STEVO... 5 years hard labour! A basic diet with no privvies!
