BARNSLEY and Wombwell train stations have been awarded for their safety.

They have been accredited by the Secure Station Scheme - run jointly by the Department for Transport and the British Transport Police - and praises measures taken to provide a safe environment for both passengers and staff.

Northern Rail, together with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), achieved the recognition having enhanced employee training, recruitment and risk assessments at the stations.

Their introducing of measures to address crime and reduce the opportunity for criminal activity were also taken into account.

David Young, deputy interim director general at SYPTE, said: "Train travel is already one of the safest ways to get around, but by focusing on finer details we can make a real difference to levels of safety at stations.

"These accreditations underline our commitment to maintain a safe and secure environment for our customers and staff."
