Funding Boost For Kids Activities

Thursday February 27 2014

PLANS to spend thousands of pounds introducing new activities for children has been announced by councillors.

The Central Area Council want to spend the cash on two schemes aimed at eight to 12-year-olds and 13 to 19-year-olds which will include activities such as sport, arts, crafts and music and after schools and holiday clubs.

Each will run for two years, costing £100,000 per year and will operate for the town centre, Kingstone, Worsbrough, Dodworth and Stairfoot wards.

It comes after it was revealed that there are 2,500 children aged eight to 12 and about 3,000 13 to 19-year-olds living in the area but activities for them have dwindled in recent years.

Coun Donna Green, chairman of the area council, said any activities for the 13 to 19-year-olds should be underpinned with information and advice about smoking prevention; drug and alcohol misuse; sexual health and reducing teenage pregnancies; healthy eating and internet safety.

She added: "We have many organisations already delivering activities to young people in Barnsley and we hope these services will look at this opportunity and consider applying to deliver the work required."
