Have Self-Service Checkouts Turned Us Into Thieves? - A WAB Debate

Tuesday February 18 2014

A FIFTH of shoppers admit to stealing £15 worth of goods every month at self-service checkouts, according to a new study.

One in five people admitted to bagging items they haven't paid for - with fruit and vegetables being  the most likely items to be taken and not scanned.

Over 50 per cent of people polled said they first started taking goods because they couldn’t get an item to register - and continued because they got away with it.

What do you think? Are you a fan of self-service checkouts or do they encourage theft? We'd love to hear your thoughts! Have your say below.

Now that most people re-use there own bags rather than using free supermarket bags I would say it's quite easy to steal something at normal tills. No-one checks that the bags in your trolley are empty before they start scanning your shopping. There was a time when some shops didn't allow shoppers to take in big shopping bags.

well we do half the work of scanning and bagging our stuff so we should get something in return for doing the work!

Grow up Aidan - it's down to theiving idiots that things cost as much as they do and by cutting staff they are actually reducing overheads and keeping prices down. 1 staff member can monitor 10 self service tills compared to just 1 normal till.... 90 less wage costs?? No brainer really, they should throw the book at anyone caught stealing.

Barnsley is in crisis as it is with jobs, the last thing we need is more unemployed people due to companies replacing people with machines.

if they dont want this to happen then they should employ people instead of relying on other folks to do it for free, no thanks

Never stolen anything in my life, never stolen from self check outs neither and I use them more than the people at til. How can people steal from them when it's done on weight.

Thieves are thieves no matter where they go. Supermarkets will have balanced the losses against staff cost savings. Theiving ba*****s should have their fingers cut off!

Is replacing a person with an automated machine really a step forward?
These machines still need someone to "mind" them and someone to service them when the continually break down.
I hate them with a passion and refuse to buy anything from B&Q because of these stupid tills.

Well more fool you. You appear to be a man who rejects positive change.

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Thursday February 20 2014 at 06:50
SO replacing a human being with an automated machine is positive change then?
No in this case I most certainly think not.

Employ someone! We do that! Do u want the cost of your shopping reduced?! I think so.. So self scan is a way of reducing a cost! Shop lifting in a large supermarket is a 'victimless crime' my goodness your very knowledgable! The cost is covered by the customers!

Theft is still theft.. Either willingly, or the staffs fault or theft by consumption! Get some morals.

Less jobs available with these tills. Same with cash machines, its started at Barclay's, no real people around to serve us soon. Load of crap!

Yes, it will happen, the machines will take over. The supermarket giants are masters in the way they sneak this kind of thing in.

Not that long ago supermarkets were not allowed to open on Sundays. Now it’s every day, all day and all night.

The first step is to get everyone used to seeing self service checkouts around, then they promote the idea that they’re keeping the prices down.
The next step is to make them the norm rather than the anomaly and.... before you know where you are..... you've been brainwashed.
You’re stood there happily talking to a blinking machine.

More people without a job...................think about it.

Its true. Barclay's bank in town have done exactly that. They will soon be fully automated,.
For those that think its a step forward, wait until something goes wrong with your account...crap!
Most of us have phoned a large company and whatever your problem is,there's never an option to press that will deal with your queries. Wait until its your money/debits/scams, its going to be rubbish. Tell it to www.#no body there.

Just had a huge row at Morrisons at Cortonwood Wood about their automated tills. Didn't recognise a snack 'meal deal' due to wrong drink being in shelf section and then manager, who I demanded to talk to, said that the auto tills were popular with shoppers. Oh, really? They save at least eight jobs and cause chaos, IMHO.

i thought it weighed each item even still the nearest to stealing i go is when a item scans up cheaper then it was supposed to and even then were only talking about penny's per item

I've always refused to use self service tills. As has already been stated above, this is just another cost saving exercise and is putting people out of work. If we're all replaced by machines none of us will have money to spend and the whole sorry system will come crashing down.

anon. What an absolute load of rubbish you post.

For instance I would love a Audi top of the range. Because it is expensive and way out of my price range it is ok to steal the car.

Theft is bad and if you can,t afford what you want then go for a cheaper option.

I did I bought a Ford Focus..

I hope your kids are happy with how you taught them . STEAL IF YOU CANT AFFORD THE ITEM!!!
