999 Calls Triple Amid Storm Chaos

Thursday February 13 2014

Fire Fire

CALLS to 999 tripled last night as powerful winds battered Barnsley and fire crews were called in to rescue motorists trapped in over turned cars.

Fire crews scrambled to respond to calls from worried residents reporting that trees were falling onto cars, gable ends collapsing, roofs blowing off and vehicles being blown over.

In the space of two hours last night, fire crews were called to:

* Burton Road, Monk Bretton where a corrugated roof blown off building

* Doncaster Road, Darfield, Barnsley – gable end collapsed on terrace house

*A629, Thurgoland, Barnsley – lorry overturned, one man assisted from cab

* Spark Lane, Mapplewell, Barnsley – corrugated roof loose on building

How did you fare in the storm last night? Do you have pictures to share? We'd love it if you uploaded them here.

Well done to all Emergency Services, they put their lives on the line, helping others!! I can't imagine how difficult it would have been for the Police as well, I can't imagine that the fire service dealt with all wind related incidents, I saw the police last night moving objects from middle of the roads last night. Well done all.

The roof that came off in monk Bretton was on Carr street, police blocked the whole street off.

Its the noise of the wind that scares me. Worst I had my bins were blown over and rubbish all over the garden. Its a bad time for lots of folk, its awful what damage that bad weather can cause.

Where would we be without our services. They go above and beyond the call of duty, whilst the rest of us stay safe indoors. Thank you to all.

they do a fantastic job and only get small amount of council taxes but annoys me that council gets most of council tax and does a poor job

I agree, they do a fantastic job and yes they get a tiny amount of each and every ones council tax. They should get more in my opinion. The council do very little except spend our money of stupid things that most people do not want or need. Come on Barnsley Council, stop letting 6 workers all look down the same hole while three dig it and another two tell some one on the mobile that they have dug it........

I'm sure the story was well intentioned by WAB and no doubt the fire service worked their socks off but the special mention ought to go to the Police. They were all over the place helping people get from a-b safely and putting themselves at risk protecting people from flying roofs etc going above and beyond what we actually pay them to do. Well done SYP!!
