Public Consultation Starts On Troubled Town Council

Thursday February 13 2014

A 12-MONTH public consultation has started over the future of cash-strapped Brierley Town Council.

Barnsley Council has started the year-long review, prompted by calls for its abolishment after its former clerk Jan Cooper stole £700,000.

Cooper, 52, was jailed for eight years in October 2013.

A petition was started to scrap the town council and a community governance review was triggered, which can grant Barnsley Council the power to abolish the authority.

Coun Alan Gardiner said: "The consultation has started. It's a long-standing issue which needs to be resolved, so we'll listen to what people think and address the matter."

Did not think this would come to anything. Looking forward to see who is consulted and who is listened to.

It used to be that folk moaned about paying £30 a year for Father Christmas, a few lights, hanging baskets and a bonfire. "All that" has gone, so what exactly are we getting for our £100+ a year? A 12 month consultation?

Let's put the thieving clerk to one side. The town council is there to engage with and represent the people of Brierley. I'm cynical but is this an attempt by Baron/Lord/Earl/Sir Steve Houghton to bypass local democracy and get his will imposed on Brierley without the inconvenience of scrutiny? It's already happened with a small "cabinet" of his pals now making council decisions instead of letting elected councillors vote on issues. The consultation, like the one for library closures will just be a smokescreen to confer an illusion of democracy. The decision has already been made.

Yes Jimmy lets put the thieving clerk to oneside like the thieving bankers and the swindling politicians. love the bit about imposing his will. Brierley council is unpopular with the majority of the residents and most will be glad to see the back of it.

Shut this council down. Never mind wasting money Barnsley Council supposedly don't have.....just get rid of it and then start on some of the actual Barnsley Councillors who waste time, fritter away money at our expense.
