Life Satisfaction In Town One Of UK's Worst

Wednesday February 5 2014

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A NEW report has said that life satisfaction in Barnsley is in the bottom 10 of the UK.

The annual report - from the Centre for Cities think tank - compares London with the rest of the UK.

Of the eight English places in the bottom ten for life satisfaction, five - Barnsley, Burnley, Blackburn, Mansfield and Rochdale - are in the north.

What do you think to this, WABers? Surely it's not that gloomy?! Have your say below.

Barnsley people like to moan and groan and live in the past, combine this with a town centre that looks like it is stuck in the 70's then what do you expect?

Oh the irony!

Insulted for posting a reply on WAB. Has Barnsley got a town centre that looks like it is stuck in the 70's? Yes.

Do Barnsley people live in the past? Some of them, yes?

Does the truth hurt sid? Yes.

Oh, do you insult women on a regular basis Sid?

You're such a sweetheart.

Reply Posted by sid on Wednesday February 5 2014 at 18:55
Steff your first post is ironic. You say Barnsley people like to moan and groan and then you do just that! Moan and groan about the town centre being stuck in the 70,s. This is what Billy meant, and I agreed. Its ironic that I had to explain it too. Lol. Thanks for the sweetheart, and you,all find I have never insulted women.

Reply Posted by Steff on Wednesday February 5 2014 at 19:08
It was not ironic sid, I was describing the town, not moaning about it. Where did I moan? I was making a point. Now if for instance I said I was fed up of our town its a **** hole, something needs to be done blah, blah, blah, then yes, but I wasn't moaning.

Wab says " Have your say" I did, I didn't moan.

steff you are digging a bigger hole for yourself,,beware you don't fall in

Reply Posted by Dawn on Wednesday February 5 2014 at 19:42
Where the hell did she moan and how is she digging a hole for herself?

She was making a point, not moaning. There is a difference.

You have dug your hole JO now jump in it and take Billynomates with you. Troll!

Reply Posted by JO on Wednesday February 5 2014 at 20:18
Why do you think you need to correct yourself Steff. Not your fault you didn't listen at school.. watch that BIG HOLE,,

hahahahahhahah moaner

They're calling you an hypocrite steff. which... You are by the looks of your post.

Not insulting you.

Reply Posted by Derrick on Sunday February 9 2014 at 06:44
I agree. It does look like its stuck in the 70s and only has 3 half decent pubs in the town.

Reply Posted by Steff on Wednesday February 5 2014 at 14:14
Poor old Billynomates.

No irony at all. My post was a discription of the town. Im a happy go lucky chick, I never moan life is too short. ;)

Will sombody be Billy's friend?

Reply Posted by sid on Wednesday February 5 2014 at 14:18
For gods sake, there are worse places. People need to get out more and enjoy life. We have lovely counrtryside and some lovely places to visit. OK the town centre,s grim, but life dosnt revolve around that surely.

Reply Posted by Brian on Wednesday February 5 2014 at 15:17
Where exactly?

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Wednesday February 5 2014 at 15:26
I agree sid,, we are never really more than a mile from some lovely countryside in our borough.
Interesting that Blackburn is in the poll, I have said this on numerous occasions but if anyone on here thinks our town centre is bad then I urge them to visit Blackburn, again I make the comparison that Blackburn makes Barnsley look like Beverly Hills in comparison.

Look into the list a bit more and you have towns were the main industries were either mining or mill towns where the main industries have been decimated by global capitalism and western consumer demand for cheap imported goods from the far east.

However, you have to look at the fortunes of some of the largest companies that chose to buy cheap imports from the far east at the cost of our once proud linen industries, especially Marks & Spencers.
I don't think so.
Cheap imports do work for some companies, look at Primark, very cheap clothes hand sewn in either India or Bangladesh.
Cheapest is not always the best though.

OOh I was off then wasn't I?....

Come on Brian. Cannon hall, Pennine trail,RSPB, to name a three. We have nice country side. Suppose it depends what you want to see and do. Not everyone's the same, but if we get off our bums and out of our cars,we don't have to go far for a nice walk.

Reply Posted by nobby on Saturday February 8 2014 at 09:35
sid how do we get there if you cant afford a car or the bus the areas you mention cawthorne as the prime one has a population of what we from more deprived ares would call wealthy should be made to put more back into barnsley town centre so people would see a more farer financial and conciderate playing field after all how much money do you need to make you happy what a shallow place we live in hence everyone backing the lotteries to get out .

Reply Posted by sid on Saturday February 8 2014 at 10:39
Take your point about the car nobby, if you don't have one due to finances then that's shame, but if they put more shops/cinemas/cafes/ etc in town then you won't be able to afforded those either. Not having a car doesn't stop you taking advantage of the lovely countryside we have. Its not all about money, I for one don't have to spend to enjoy time with my family,a walk down the fields is great, life's what you make it. The lottery bit, well, just stop dreaming, its never going to happen, hope it does mind, but up till then,we have to accept our lot, stop moaning, and make our own lives more pleasant money or no.

Steveo, we all have opinions, so crack on. Why bring Blackburn into the discussion? Did we need to know what it's like in Blackburn? That'll be a big fat NO then.

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Thursday February 6 2014 at 10:52
You obviously do not read the main title in the post I would guess as one of the towns in the bottom ten is Blackburn.
I was comparing Blackburn to Barnsley and obviously you have never been to Blackburn ,but, again, and just to reiterate for you:
Blackburn makes Barnsley look like Beverly Hills.

When I lived in Barnsley it was easy to pull it to pieces but having been away living in Oz for the last 4 years I have to say that I do miss it a lot. Not enough to move back but I do enjoy my visits back from time to time !!

Reply Posted by sarah on Thursday February 6 2014 at 11:31
Why in gods name do we want to be compared to London, now theres a toilet if ever ive seen one. Wherever you go in Barnsley you can hear someone with a southern accent so it cant be that fantastic. Yes we have a dodgy town centre full of dodgy people and pidgeons we might talk a bit daft ( as my southern sis in law says) but thats barnsley and I for one like it (not the dodgy people) and wouldnt live anywhere else.

Reply Posted by rainbow on Thursday February 6 2014 at 11:56
Barnsley has been going downhill for years ever since the planners started trying to improve things. We had the best market in England, most people were working and enough money to go out for a pint every night if they wanted. Now there talking about ripping up all the buildings built in the 70's and hardly anyone has a decent job unless they work for Barnsley MBC. Well done Labour.!!!

Reply Posted by Andy on Thursday February 6 2014 at 14:22
They must have done this survey on people who now have to pay a bit of rent or were thrown OFF incapacity benefits....ha ha ha

Very droll old chap do you usually have a go at the disabled and the poor of our society keep it up you will soon get your knighthood. How about working for the Government in an advisory roll on the privatisation of the national health system. We could certainly use you

Reply Posted by Griff on Thursday February 6 2014 at 21:05
It's because the good folk of Barnsley keep voting the Numpty labour council in. What has Labour ever done for the tarn?

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Friday February 7 2014 at 09:15
Labour have done loads for this town Griff.
They gave us the rusty nit comb (on loan from YSP) and the lovely (NOT) fountains and town hall garderns, full of different grasses of which look like a five year old have planted.
The gave us Dugher who bleats on about the "fantastic" jobs that he and Labour have created at Asos...

Reply Posted by Littleoldlady on Friday February 7 2014 at 09:23
@ Steveo.I have never been to Blackburn, so you are correct in that fact. But then , why would I, if it is so bad. I do visit places like York and Skipton only because they are lovely places to go to. I work hard for my money, so I go where I want and Blackburn on my favorite places to visit? That'll be a big fat NO then.

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Friday February 7 2014 at 09:36
Calm down dear its only a forum post.
Again, I was making a comparison between the two towns.
Yes we all moan about Barnsley, but there are a hell of a lot of worse places to be shipwrecked in..

Just saying like, everyone is entitled to their own opinion are they not?

Reply Posted by nobby on Saturday February 8 2014 at 09:39
take it youre the only one int tarn who doesnt back lottery,me thinks not and if you won you would be staying put me thinks not to that aswell.

Reply Posted by anon on Saturday February 8 2014 at 10:23
@nobby, I read the odds of winning in the early years, I don't back the lottery. Of course if you're rich, then you would be off like a shot to warmer places etc, but up till then its time people realised Barnsley's not bad. It,all be the scruffs that think Barnsley's crap because where ever they live they won't educate themselves and get up that ladder. If I was on benefits, jobless,no car etc, then I would think Barnsley vwas depressing, but it would feel like that no matter where these loafers live. They won't make themselves a good life anywhere. Not being smug, just saying.

Reply Posted by sid on Friday February 7 2014 at 10:17
Barnsley's not such a bad place. Last summer,we went to 3 fantastic events at RSPBOld moor, Cannon hall have events, Wentworth is brilliantThere are lots of brilliant events all summer. Look around people and get involved.

Reply Posted by rainbow on Friday February 7 2014 at 13:25
RSPB old moor is in Wath and is wonderful for birds, Wentworth is in Rotherham and Cannon Hall is almost in Wakefield. The story is about life in Barnsley which unfortunately has been going downhill for the last 30 years. The main is reason is lack of jobs, mining, engineering, clothing manufacturing have all left and nothing except warehouse jobs and the declining retail industry. Looks pretty bleak for young people these days.???

Reply Posted by Hoyland Red on Friday February 7 2014 at 14:18
Bit of a bizarre post about locations rainbow. Old moor is actually in the borough of Barnsley and what difference does it make if Cannon Hall is 'nearly' anywhere - the fact is, it is in Barnsley. Using your logic, Wentworth is nearly in Barnsley, assuming of course Sid meant the village and not the castle. However, the point is regardless of imaginary boundaries there is beautiful countryside in every direction within a very short distance. Enjoying life doesn't have to be all about how much coin you earn but enjoying what you've got and Barnsley, in my opinion has enough to offer - you just need to get off your arse and use it.

Reply Posted by Snowy on Friday February 7 2014 at 14:22
rainbow@ Cannon Hall is almost in Wakefield. I bet you think Leeds castle is almost in Leeds..

You need do get out more and turn the sat nav off and use a Map..

Reply Posted by Red Optimist on Friday February 7 2014 at 17:07
Cannon Hall is nowhere near Wakefield.

Reply Posted by sid on Friday February 7 2014 at 14:12
Oh flipping hell @rainbow. That's just being miserable, 20mins in your car, you're in lovely countryside! Cheer up and get out, there's supposed to be a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, what's at the end of yours? Just another rain cloud.?
Barnsley not a bad place, there's worse.

Reply Posted by AlanB on Friday February 7 2014 at 17:11
The natural environment around Barnsley is lovely. Anything which has had the hands of our Labour councillors on it is a mess.

I lived down south, just north of London, for six years.Moved backa few years ago and couldnt be happier. Took me 10 months to find work. I'm on a lower wage, but I'm content with my lot.
Happier here than I was there.
Barnsley is a good town with a lot of good people; unfortunately too many concentrate too often on what is not here, rather than what is, or what could be.
Always moaning, rather than praising those are doing good or who are making an effort.
For this town to thrive it needs a good retail experience and cultural offer, both will pull tourist. This will take time and a lot of work on what is a modest budget.
But if people do indeed care about it, then what they need to do is quit whining on here, get your arse over to your local councillor and make them work for you.
Thats what they are there for. Don't assume that whinging on here will make your councillors listen.
Barnsley has a lot to offer, compared to other small northern towns, but it could be a lot more. Dont hold it back by constantly slagging every suggested improvement off. If you dont agree with it, get off your bums and do something about it, instead of baiting people on here.

Also, since it is a legal requirement for children to be in full time education, training or work until they are 17/18, then the construction of a new and quality sixth form college is just as important as the upkeep and improvement of schools.

Some posters on here think you have to be rich to enjoy any kind of life!
Some of you need to buck up and start living. There was no money back in the day,and I have lots of lovely memories. Also, I wonder how many of the moaners have spent a couple of hours in the FREE museum? Its sad when happiness is all about money, yes its better with money, but if you can't/wont earn it then sorry but its your life sort it out.

Reply Posted by rainbowsnot on Saturday February 8 2014 at 12:56
How and where did they carry out this survey, have any of us in Barnsley been questioned about life satisfaction? Probably not. A couple of years ago a survey was published stating that people in the north were fatter than people in the south. I contacted the survey team to ask where they got the information from, eventually they answered with the statement 'we guessed'. I assume this survey would have been carried out in a similar way.

I’m Barnsley born and bred and proud of it. You can’t beat Barnsley folk, they’re straight talking, no nonsense salt of the earth. They are champions of good humoured banter and can always see the funny side of a situation.
Sort the Councillors and the jobs out and we've cracked it
So, the ‘think tank’ can think again.....I’m content with my life. If I wasn't I’d do something about it!

I'm Barnsley born & bread now living in North Yorkshire but still visit parents & family every week.Barnsley is now suffering from years & years of neglect from the Labour Council and needs change, the town has been allowed to go into decline, mega amounts of monies wasted over years. The pits closed 30 years ago so that excuse can not be used the town has had years to move on and the great people & community's deserve far better I'm afraid to say that unless change then parts of the town will be lost forever!!

Barnsley should just start to keep the old buildings save money instead of knocking them down and building shit and doing them out be a lot cheaper keep the beautiful buildings and get same result

Reply Posted by Hazel on Sunday February 9 2014 at 21:18
Firstly I agree with Steff, Barnsley is way behind the times. Its drab, dirty and gradually going down a very steep hill.
But Chris makes a valid point in sorting the Councillors out instead of some of them earning £30,000 a year..........and for what
There is apathy when it comes to voting and many people appear to think they have to vote the same as their parents and their grandparents or the earth will disappear. Load of rubbish, vote some new life into the community and we may hear and see new ideas.
I am Barnsley born and bred and in my 70's and I have seen Barnsley change from a thriving town to somewhere no one is proud of anymore. Change is needed but will anyone make the effort.............in a word NO.
