Family's Pet Cat Viciously Killed By Dogs

Friday January 24 2014

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A BIRDWELL pet-lover had to watch in horror as her beloved pet cat was killed by two dogs in a deliberate attack on Friday morning.

Faye Gibbs described how she was watching out of the window at about 10.30am when Hugo - the family cat - was chased up a tree near their home at Balk Farm.

To her horror, two men accompanying the dogs shook the tree - causing Hugo to fall and be subjected to a horrific attack from the dogs.

Faye said the men looked 'young' and had a dark-coloured lurcher and greyhound.

"Hugo was a lovely and loving cat," Faye added. "It's awful what these two people have done."

Police are now investigating.

I hope the sick b@st@rds are found. If anyone did that to any one of my pets, I don't think I would be responsible for what I did to them.

sick people in this world....horrible

This is not the dogs fault but instead the sick owners who shook the tree. They should be publicly named and shamed and humiliated before serving their punishment. I am all for bringing back the stocks and leaving the sick freaks on show in the cold precinct where people can see what they have done.
If any of their mates turn up or the usual sort of idiots who laugh then they should be made to join them.
These people need to be banned from keeping animals for life and locked away until they can understand the severity and sick nature of what their actions caused.
They should also be made to work to pay for their keep whilst in prison and if they refuse, or don't put in sufficient effort then they should have basic cell with no facilities until they earn them.

these dogs are renowned for this kind of thing,i don't like cats. but it must be awful to see this kinda thing happening to a family pet. is it certain the dogs were set on it deliberately? I hope the person in question who owned the cat recovers from her trauma soon.

'these dogs are renowned for this type of thing' - what do you mean by that?
Is it that you know the dogs involved and they have a bad reputation for attacking things, in which case you know who is involved and should have a conscience that makes you go to the police immediately...
or -
Is it that you are making a stark generalisation against dogs that they attack cats and therefore it is the dogs at fault....
Which is it? You need to be careful how you word things as not all dogs are not cat friendly and also the cat had safely escaped up the tree out of the dogs way, in which case the dogs would have hung around for a minute or so then got bored and wandered off.
The real fact is that the lads who shook the tree caused the attack in just the same way as if they had picked up the cat and thrown it to the dogs.
They are simply scum and should be reported by anyone who knows them immediately - and someone around there does know who they are. I am glad you have showed some compassion towards the cats owner, but, and it's a big but, please don't sully the name of all dogs because of the mindless behaviour of 2 humans.

to Observer : " these dogs are renowned for this kind of thing" .. all dogs will chase cats or any furry animal that squeals, its in their nature. Its not necessarily their fault that this poor cat was killed, its their owners actions which depicted this to happen so reread the descript again, and I quote " two men accompanying the dogs shook the tree - causing Hugo to fall and be subjected to a horrific attack from the dogs.".. if thats not the dogs being set on the cat deliberately then why shake the tree to cause it to fall out.... ??? That should answer your question.

As said above, what absolute barstewards - and I wholeheartedly agree with every comment here re how they should be punished. Are the RSPCA investigating aswell as the police? Allso my thoughts go to the poor girl who witnessed her pet go through it all

These dogs are field dogs. Hunting and killing is in their nature. That's probably why these scumbags own this breed. After all, with their mentality they're not going to walk round with a poodle and a yorky are they.
Disgusting vile pigs, the pair of them!

Catch them and make them wear t-shirts saying what they did and let them loose in Barnsley town centre..see how they feel getting chased by animals.

This is not the fault of the dogs this is the fault of the dog owners and am sure the distribution of the dogs won't take the police to long to find the dog owners how they think this is they are going to get away with it is beyond me despicable cruel people

This happened to me when i lived in Darfield. My house backed on to the ings. 3 dogs were in the field. My cat was hidden in the long grass, she tried her hardest to run from them but as she jumped the fence to get back in my garden they got her. I climbed over my 6 foot fence to get the dogs of her, i was hysterical. When i finally got her after kicking the dogs i took her home but sadly she died in my arms. I think they broke her neck. The lads who was with the digs didn't seem to care so one day when i saw their parents with the same dog i confronted them. I got an apology & asked if i wanted them to buy me a kitten but i said no.
Why do they let things like this happen?
I've had whippets, i never taught them to chase & they never did. I hope to god these evil people rot for what they have done but unfortunately we all know they will just get a fine. Disgusting.
I know the heartache the owners of the cat are feeling & as a cat lover & owner i'd like to say sorry for your loss.

If they catch them , as others have said "slap on the wrist " Could not believe that that IRA bomber who killed 4 soldiers and numerous horses with his nail bomb in London as been given bail.

How distressing for the owner. We had our kitten killed at our own front door by the neighbours lurcher when I was a kid. The vision will never leave me. The owner used to take it rabbiting with their Jack Russell. Also had Guinea Pigs cages broken into by a dog roaming the streets at night. My Mum went looking for it with the garden fork and found it on a field with the guinea pig in its mouth. She didn't hurt the dog but knew who it belonged to and called the police. We've had our small Yorkshire Terrier attacked by an Afghan Hound at the local park. I think you can train dogs to hate cats as well as it being in their nature. For the guys to do this deliberately, they shouldn't be allowed to keep animals.

This is all in the name of lamping, to make the dogs keen for the chase, I have a greyhound and a cat and live in harmony. This so called sport should be band.

Reply Posted by someone on Monday January 27 2014 at 17:07
@micheala you have no idea. All in the name of lamping?! In the middle of the day?? Also how many hares have you seen fall from trees?? I have 2 lurchers. Neither have worked, and are as soft as a brush with childreb and other dogs, but yet both would kill a cat if it came into the garden and they had the chance. Id love to leave them in the garden in summer, but can't risk it because my Inconsiderate neighbours let their cats roam and crap in my garden. Not great when i have 2 toddlers!!

Reply Posted by michaela on Monday January 27 2014 at 18:20
@someone my cat has a cat litter tray and goes out in the morning and comes home and does it's biz in its tray, I also have had neighbours that let their cats out and deposit their poo in my garden and this is not nice, especially when you have children. My dogs would chase any strange cat out of the garden, and providing i did not shake it out of a tree they would not get it. A cat knows where it can go and where not to go. Lamping is as you rightly state not done during the day but some people do this barbaric act during day light hour to (keen their dogs up) this is a fact that you can not deny. Whilst i understand that your dogs are not working dogs, may i suggest that this is common policy amongst the un educated of the lambing community. Each year at this time there are several reports of domestic cats, rabbits ETC being ripped apart by dogs encouraged by thugs in the name of sport.

@someone, i would just like to say that there are very few dogs that are bad, it is generally their owners that are bad owners and can not control their pets, so may be you should look at how you control you pets

Please stop the bickering and lets get back to what actually happened that Friday Morning. These vile people knew what they were doing. Hugo had got away from their dogs. They need banning for life for ever having any kind of animal. Someone out there knows who these people are. Lets name and shame them and get some justice for poor Hugo!!!

You all seem to be missing the point!!!! Majority of dogs irrelevant if their upbringing will grab cats... That's NOT the point here!!!!!! The men shook the cat out of the tree!!!! They literally used to cat as bait!!!!! This is basically the same as all this with them pinching dogs etc to use as bait!!!! The owners want finding and they want punishing... THEIR actions are what caused the death of the cat!!!! Dogs cannot climb trees!!!! Therefore had these idiots not shook the cat out of the tree he would have been safe!!!! END OF!!!!

if you have a lurcher and a greyhound together there is only one reason why you have these dogs. hunting or baiting

Reply Posted by someone on Wednesday January 29 2014 at 21:49
@observer, not necessarily. mine were all rescued. I have them because I happen to love them as a breed. they are excellent with children, and make very loving pets.

@michaela, i'm more than capable of looking after my animals, thank you. you're stating that your dogs would also chase a cat from the garden, but if mine do it, I'm not in control? my dogs are lurchers, meaning they are built for speed and agility. if a cat is dumb enough to come into the garden while they are out, then maybe I should just let them be and see what happens? But, in fact, i do the neighbourly thing and keep them out of the way. To be honest, if it's their garden, they shouldn't have to be under my control / on a lead constantly. my neighbours cats are free to roam regardless, but my dogs spend the summer cooped up. how is that fair?

Reply Posted by mia on Thursday January 30 2014 at 16:25
@ someone. Will you stop, its not about your pets at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its about that poor cat that was murdered and those thugs need punishing. Someone out there knows who they are. Phrase to remember, JUSTICE FOR HUGO!!
