Pensioner Admits Killing Wife And Daughter

Wednesday January 15 2014

A PENSIONER has admitted to killing his wife and daughter at Sheffield Crown Court.

Peter Redfern, 70, from Wath-upon-Dearne, was charged following the deaths of 67-year-old Jean Redfern and 33-year-old Sarah Redfern in July last year.

Emergency services attended the family home just after 7pm on July 22 - after Redfern called police claiming to have killed his wife and daughter.

A post mortem revealed that Jean suffered asphyxiation and Sarah died from severe head injuries.

Peter Redfern pleaded guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility regarding his wife, Jean, and pleaded guilty to the murder of his daughter, Sarah.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Singleton said: "Peter Redfern murdered his wife and daughter in an attack that was shocking and impossible to understand.

"Only he knows why he committed such a violent act.

"We will continue to support the family and are relieved on their behalf that they will not have to suffer the trauma of a trial.

"Jean and Sarah were a mother and daughter who were as close as a mother and daughter could be.

"Our thoughts are with Jean and Sarah’s family as they begin this next step of the grieving process."

Sentencing is expected to take place at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday.

Glad they can both rest in peace now justice has been served and this man will hopefully spend the rest of his remaining life in prison.
