A NEW scheme has launched in Barnsley which will see free bike stands offered to community groups to encourage more people to get active.

Community groups, small businesses, surgeries, shops, offices, churches and voluntary sector organisations can all apply for up to two new cycle parking stands.

The community cycle parking scheme is supported by Barnsley Council and is managed by a social enterprise called ParkThatBike.

Coun Tim Cheetham said: "This project shows our on-going commitment to providing improved, high quality cycling facilities. Good parking helps tackle the problem of cycle theft and sends a strong message
that an organisation is doing its bit to promote cycling and to reduce its carbon footprint."

ParkThatBike director Peter Andrews added: "This is a simple, cost-effective initiative to combat cycle theft and to make cycling easier and more convenient. We're particularly keen to see applications from small businesses, community groups and good causes who would otherwise struggle to afford quality cycle parking."

More cycle lanes and some better weather control is very much in need … one of those is certainly never going to happen in Barnsley … the other one is about the weather :-/
