Jobs At Risk As Council Looks To Slash Its Budget

Monday December 23 2013

OVER 160 jobs could be at risk as Barnsley Council considers more cuts for next year's budget.

A council report shows there are 162 jobs at risk of redundancy. Decisions will be made by all councillors in February.

Council leader Sir Steve Houghton said: "We've saved £45m already. We're looking at £18m for this year and next, followed by £17.4m and £8.6m in subsequent years.

"We will be fundamentally changing the way we operate, by delivering our priorities in a more business-like manner.

"We will become a leaner, more productive organisation."

Other areas which could see changes include a potential six per cent rise in burial fees, a 50 per cent rise in parking permit costs and the introduction of parking charges at Locke Park.

What do you think to this? Have your say below.

I'm sure this was discussed over canapés, smoked salmon sandwiches and a glass of wine at their buffet lunches all funded by the tax payer. Oh how they laughed!

Sir Steve Houghton what a laugh I bet his job and all his councillors jobs are safe though

"delivering our priorities in a more business like manner"

How's that for admitting they're complacent and flippant with tax payers funds?!!

Why weren't they already behaving this way?

Also bragging about savings.....where? What about the continued wasted funds on what seems like a daily basis? Consultant being paid £11k a month, then£2m on traffic lights! What expensive wool are they now using to cover our eyes?

I understand people are mad when they discuss things over a buffet. But let's be fair it's the government slashes the budget for this area the local council doesn't go to the government and say slash are budget cause we are going to make people redundant.

The Tories always cut Labour controlled council budgets more than their own it is a well known fact.

I hate the thought of anyone losing their jobs in this current climate but you only have to see the further savings the council has to make in subsequent years to realise that the 162 "at risk" will be a mere tip of the iceberg.

Again, instead of middle management facing the chop it will be the people on the bottom rung of the ladder that will go first.

Scrapping councillors allowances and Houghton taking a substantial pay cut would go way to cutting a large proportion of the proposed savings but that will never happen will it?

The "austerity measures" the Tories imposed on the people of this country are a "smoke and mirrors" exercise.

Since forming the "coalition" with the Lib Dems the Tories have borrowed MORE in three years than Labour did in 13.
Since 2010 the UK National Debt has grown from 44% of GDP to 76% GDP.

But the Tories tell us that borrowing an extra 400 BILLION represents "paying back" the National Debt that they "inherited" from Labour.

Hmm ,Smoke and mirrors and Right Wing Propaganda more like.

Well I guess cutting a Labour run council's budget is probably a good thing, as it gives them less money to waste and squander! By that definition, if we had a different party at Town Hall then perhaps their budget would be better and also spent more wisely?! #hasthepennydroppedyet?

@kikenny, silly person. Your insults are meaningless.

400 BILLION "extra" borrowed with an estimated £3 - £400 BILLION to borrow until the next general election making the told UK deficit £1.9 / £2 TRILLION POUNDS.

Saddling our future generations with an estimated £37,000 for every man woman and child in this country with debt for at least 100 YEARS.

Osbournomics simply does not work, oh yes the Tories ARE REALLY CUTTING THE DEFICIT ARENT THEY?

Last week we had two local Labour Councillors delivering Xmas cards in our area .When I told one a few home truths he just smirked and walked away.

The other Labour Councillor did claim just short of £30000 in expenses this year.

Let's start cutting here.

Oh dear your beloved Nick Clegg AKA The Tory Pony showed his true colours yesterday when he announced he would "block" Tory plans to limit immigration to 75,000 people a year.

(seems he does have a veto vote after all)

Seeing as though immigration is THE hot topic of the moment it just shows how near sighted and out of touch Clegg really is.

Another nail in the coffin for Clegg and the Lib Dems!

A few years ago Steve Houghton would have slit his wrists, rather than accept a knighthood, if you need any reminding of how people lime him, change when a little power comes their way.

Stop bickering and saying childish things. People's jobs and the standard of living of all of us! For the record there are jobs being lost at all levels of the council and cuts everywhere, except maybe for silly things like cleaning dirty lazy people's gardens, cleaning up fly tipping. We all need to do our bit and hopefully the conservatives will be gone soon. Stick together don't let them divide us!

The Tories have already divided us with their nefarious right wing propaganda.
They have made it "policy" to ostracise benefit claimants, the poor , the sick and the disabled.
They have made it policy to lie, cheat and borrow MORE money in three years than what Labour borrowed in THIRTEEN.
