Stranger-Danger Warning Issued To Parents After Scare

Thursday January 19 2012

PARENTS have been warned to remind their children about stranger-danger after two alleged incidents in Barnsley this week.

Police say they have had reports of two seperate incidents which they think are unconnected. The first one was in the Cudworth area and the second was in the South Hiendley area.

West Yorkshire Police are dealing with one complaint from a 17-year-old girl who was approached by a man in a car, and South Yorkshire Police are investigating a complaint that was reported to them on Sunday from a girl who says she was approached by a man in a black car.

Police have looked at CCTV footage but have been unsuccessful in identifying any vehicle.

A police spokesman said: "We always investigate when we get reports of cases like this but we can only investigate first-hand reports, and not third or fourth hand.

"The descriptions given are completely different so we don't know if they are linked or not. If people think they have been a victim of something like this they should report it but we do need it first hand, not from someone who knows someone."

Birkwood Primary School issued a notice to parents this week, reminding them to remind their children not to speak to strangers and to always report it if one approached them.

Julie Allen, the headteacher, said: "We acted on the information recieved. It is our duty to alert our parents to be vigilant."

The letter - titled Black Car Alert - said: "I have received information about a black car touring the local area trying to entice young girls to get into it with a man in his 40s. Please report any sightings of a suspicious nature to the police. Please also ensure that your children are aware and remind them not to get into cars with strangers or talk to strangers."

My wife was approached by a man in a big black 4x4 car a few week back on smithies lane on her way to school. The guy pulled up beside her and looked at my 3 yr old son who was in his pushchair and smiled at him, then he just drove off. He didn't even make eye contact or say anything to my wife, he pulled up right close to her too. I posted this on we are barnsley facebook but people thought i was been silly.
