Police Looks To Extend Town Centre Drink Order
Tuesday January 17 2012
POLICE are considering extending an order to Oakwell that would give them greater powers against drunk people who are causing nuisance and disorder.
The Section 12 orders - which are essentially drinking control areas - mean that people have to surrender their alcohol when asked by police and also can be issued with £80 fines and even be arrested if they continue causing trouble.
The orders already exist in areas of Kingstone, Locke Park and Worsborough Common, but police are now looking to extend it to cover Oakwell area, including Bridge Street.
Inspector Julie Mitchell said: "We have had issues of people being rowdy and this is another tool for us to address that behaviour.
"On match days people are walking round with alcohol in that area and there have been a few issues. Residents have been very supportive of this idea."
The police will continue consultation with residents and then it will go to the council for approval.
