Traffic Lights Set For Approval At Infamous Motorway Junction

Monday December 2 2013

A £2MILLION plan to introduce traffic lights at a notoriously busy motorway junction is all set for approval.

The motorway junction at Dodworth has been recommended for approval by Barnsley Council to reduce congestion.

Council officers suggest development to the west of Barnsley is being constrained by existing traffic congestion at junction 37 of the M1.

The Department for Transport has pledged £1.4million for the project, with the £600,000 shortfall to be made up by a grant from the European Regional Development Fund or, if that bid fails, the council.

The scheme would be similar to the project at Birdwell, junction 36 of the M1, and involve lights being placed at all eight entrances and exits of the roundabout.

£2m for "Council" approved traffic lights?

Next thing, the council will be telling you a sandwich costs £300, a cup of coffee £50, laptop £15,000 etc etc...

The plans appears to be for the council to say it costs loads and see if anyone notices (maybe get a discount and pocket the rest) I'd like to see a full accounted breakdown of why this costs even close to£2m. Very questionable indeed.

Any brown envelopes being passed round at council meetings? #justsaying

Write to the Highways Agency and ask for a breakdown of the costs as I don't think they read WAB. Alternatively throw around inane ramblings on a website about brown envelopes and hope that someone thinks that you've got some 'info'- jeez.

Maybe they can f@@K it up like they have at Birdwell. Since the new lanes were put in place there it's almost as non negotiable as Stairfoot roundabout. Not sure about reducing traffic, seems to me they just want to make things WORSE AS USUAL!!

whats wrong with birdwell? only an idiot would have trouble negotiating 3 lanes.. bloody hell learn to drive would you.

Stairfoot roundabout is easy to negotiate... you just need to be smart enough to know what exit you want and when

Maybe if the are digging on there they should let BT put down a fibre connection to dodworth as the speeds and connections up here are sh!te

Don't know about traffic and congestion but it will certainly make things safer for all the school kids gong to and from Horizon community college because very few drivers use their indicators when turning onto the motorway so you are quite literally taking your life into your own hands. It would be a lot better if there were lights there giving the children safer opportunities to cross rather than running across and having the risk of falling over.

It's a joke

Unless they can also improve traffic flow through the main crossroads at peak times I don't think they'll get the results they are looking for. Maybe they should mark some box junctions on the roundabout & enforce those with cameras to avoid exit blocking.

@ Hoyland Red, I'm guessing you think £2,000,000 is about the going rate for a couple of traffic lights then? Please don't put yourself in charge of the council or a child's piggy bank for that matter.

@Richard - I'm guessing you have no idea of construction costs and no idea of what the scheme actually entails but never the less are pretty quick to suggest brown envelopes??? Please don't put yourself in charge of a keyboard.

£2m? That's the project managers getting brand new Apple MacBooks, iPads and a few new 'Company Cars'.

Great Stuff

@ Hoyland Red, I'm not going to get into a slanging match with you.

I do not however accept that it costs £2m for a couple of traffic lights. It's not like they are building a new supermarket with a lit car park. It's traffic lights. £2m???

Richard - you don't have to get into a slanging match but ffs direct your angst in the right direction. Contact the Highways Agency (not the Council) and ask them to supply you with a breakdown (very outline) of why it's suggested that the scheme will cost £2million. I can assure you it will not be just a couple of traffic lights as you suggest - oh and while you're on ask them which Councillors are getting the brown envelopes because you've inferred on a public forum that someone is on the take. #justsaying

Idiots, there's more congestion at junction 36 since they put them lights up then there's ever been.

The article states that Barnsley Council made the approval and recommendation and the Council itself has put themselves in the frame as guarantor to fund the shortfall. I think we have all read the articles detailing the Council's regular mismanagement of tax payers funds and indeed the Labour Party's own huge debts, which naturally leads to questionable relationships they have with certain organisations.

We've seen Labour councillors employing their spouses for handsome salaries etc and being frivolous with our money.

£2m is a huge sum of money for something as relatively trivial as traffic lights, especially when there are so many other ways of channeling tax payers money.

Please stop getting your councillors and your MPs mixed up, councillors do not employ anyone, they represent their area at the Town Hall. You send MPs to London to represent you there - THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING. You need to stop slandering people on here.

Karen, I'm sorry you feel I am slandering people. I can assure you I am not.

The majority of people that seem to post against me are clear hardened Labour voters most likely from several generations of Labour voters. It does not mean they are being told the truth by their Labour MP's and Councillors and it does not mean they should listen to them (whilst they blindly fleece them and line their own pockets).

Its not slander to bring some truth for ALL to see, it is in fact the total opposite of slander. Labour voters need to start peering through the Labour smoke screen once in a while. The town is a shambolic embarrassment, it didn't improve under a Labour government and it most certainly isn't going to improve with a Labour council that's been running it so very poorly for years and years.

Should also add walk overs for school kid from Horizon going to Dodworth so they don't have to walk across the junctions of the motorway. It's an accident waiting to happen when you see how fast cars travel around the roundabout.

When the stair foot traffic lights fail to work there is actually less traffic. The councils and government have no insentive to correct these traffic problems becase while you are sat there ticking over the fuel tax is spooning off in to the chancellors pocket. Furthermore they claim congestion a slap a charge on that. Anybody getting involved in politics these day are doing it simply to line their own pocket. Ah well,,, dans expenses will be less this yr,,, maybe his wife could retire from the scam job he gave her.

Craig I think you've found the solution to all the congestion! Take all the clueless drivers off the roads and, to quote Eric Cantona, voila!!!

I can't see why junction 37 needs any improvement. Not in the grand scheme of things.

36 is far worse by comparison. And it's no better with the money they've frittered on it over the past few years.

All these major junctions/roundabouts work far better when the systems/lights are not working.

Yeah just like Birdwell and that has not worked either still has bad queueing back to the travellers every morning

the motorway junction does not need lights it will only make the traffic back up further down the road. I cannot see how it will improve things

One way to stop congestion. dont use your cars..simple

The problem is not the roundabout, it's Broadway Crossroads. Make a big roundabout on the spare land next to Pogmoor Road / Dodworth Road and make the current junction a dedicated left turn from Dodworth Road onto Broadway going up and Dodworth Road onto Pogmoor Road coming down and all other traffic onto the roundabout and problem solved. No traffic lights required.

Hahaha this is a great idea !! Yea let's put lights on the junction when there's no problem with it haha I agree with jonny c broadway is the problem !! So once the lights go up at the busy times will now hold traffic on the junction for no reason and surly will push the traffic back down the slip roads more !!! There will be a higher risk of it backing onto the motorway yea great idea !! Tell you what council instead of creating problems why not use that 2 million quid and go sort the damn roads out first the potholes on the roads are pathetic you guys need to get it together and do sumat !!?
