Town Centre Improvement Project Expanded

Thursday November 28 2013

THE town centre improvement project is set to be expanded to include an area of Market Hill and the east side of Church Street.

The already approved Urban Centre Infrastructure (UCI) project will enhance almost 11,000 square metres on Eldon Street, Regent Street South, Hanson Street, Royal Street, Regent Street and Eastgate.

This includes paving in natural materials (York stone and granite) and new lighting and street furniture.

The project has been worked up to the detailed design stage and was subject to full public and stakeholder consultation.

It will go ahead if agreed by cabinet at their next meeting on Wednesday, December 4.

Cllr Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson, said: "The consultation with the public and business users has been very positive and the aim is that access to all premises in both areas will be maintained throughout the duration of the project."

The report seeks additional match funding of £0.322million which will be required to secure the additional grant of £0.188million from the European Regional Development Fund to enable the project expansion to be completed.

The UCI project is ready to be tendered with an anticipated start on site in March 2014 and will take approximately 13 months to complete.

Barnsley Council has secured £1.092million from the European Regional Development Fund.

Paving and street furniture isn't going to make a diffrence. You can't polish a turd! You missed out redeveloping the town and the People of Barnsley are starting to realise this. We are now left with a town centre from the 70's.

Roy Miller and Steve Houghton, You are the weakest link, goodbye!

It might make it look nicer, but surely a little bit of maintenance, and the improvement of really dilapidated areas would make a bit more sense.

You don't replace your cooker when it works and needs a clean, when your fridge is broken. You clean the cooker and fix/replace the fridge.

York stone will take longer than 13 month to lay it, they will Nick it quicker than it gets laid.

If Roy Miller is in charge double the budget (WAB 0.322 Million is £,322,000 by the way - just in case you don't know how to display money correctly) Double the timescale at least and lower your expectations.

I know, although a comma isn't required in '£,322,000' as you've put it. You should have put '£322,000'. Thanks for pointing that out...

In the late 1970s before the Barnsley Alhambra Centre, Sheffield Meadowhall and while the Doncaster Arndale centre was still a massive pull as the only shopping mall. The Co op who had all of the top of Market street, one end of Wellington st and the top of the road where the Alambra Centre now sits wanted to roof the street creating an enclosed shopping area way before any other town or city. It was declined because Henry Boot had just built the market complex and the BHS building was in the planning stage and they did'nt want to upset those clients. They could not see that more customers would come from the outside areas therefore more revenue. Small minded then and small mined now (paving and benches for 2014?) just look at the Wicker Sheffield with posh paving and the most expensive street furniture and its more of a dump than before (try google maps Wicker Sheffield)

Some ppl are just never happy! Its a start isn't it? They've made a great job of the town hall and the gardens (apart from the comb).. I totally agree with someone who said we have a town from the 70's and cheapside does NEED a face lift, but as I said, its a start!
