Thieves Target Truckers' Diner

Friday November 15 2013

A DINER was raided by thieves who got away with goods and equipment worth more than £2,500.

Owner of the Shortwood Diner, Gary Bottom, said the thieves even took his griddle - that he uses to cook truckers' breakfasts on - along with pies, soft drinks and charity boxes for Afghan Heroes and Barnsley Hospice.

The thieves got in by ripping a panel off the back of the diner, which seats 14 people at Dearne Valley Parkway near Platts Common roundabout.

Gary, 56, of George Street, Hoyland, set up the diner almost 12 months ago but has already been targeted previously by thieves who stole cables and gas bottles.

He said he was not insured and it had cost him £1,000 to secure the premises after the latest raid on October 29.

"It has caused mayhem," he said. "I have always wanted to run a diner and I finally did it and now I'm being kicked in the teeth."

It's a shame, but why would you leave the charity boxes in there? And you should always be insured! Next time take majority of the contents home it's not brain science

My God, you really are heartless. The man was robbed blind and all you can say is he should have been insured and take his equipment home with him. jesus, his type of business doesn't make that much profit, so maybe he couldn't afford to insure it? Anyhow a man should be able to leave his stuff where he chooses too, without the threat of some low life scum taking it from the working mans grasp.

Why should he feel the need to strip his business down and take it home. Thieving scum should learn to go to work and earn money rather than stealing to make a living! He's a good man and works hard to keep his living. The thieving scum need their hands chopping off!!!

This is my uncle and he's spent a lot of time, effort and money turning this diner from a filthy disgrace to a great diner that gets lots of business. Don't you think it's enough that his livelihood has been ruined that he doesn't then need scummy comments about what he has done wrong. The thieves are low life scum. Let's blame them not Gary! He makes a mean breakfast though guys so stop by one time if you're on your travels!

when premises are closed then all types of man traps should be allowed to be used inside as long as a warning sign is there

Sorry Emma that your uncle has been robbed so callously. There are so evil people out there, either greedy or even jealous...... It is a must that the Diner is fully insured from now on . Best of luck for the future.

King Louis I agree.
I like to think I am a reasonable person but these thieves should be and need to be stopped in their tracks. Put warning signs up and set man traps, if the thieves choose to ignore the warning so be it.

You lot are missing the point. This poor bloke has had his livelihood destroyed by low life thieving scum bags on more than one occasion. Have you lot any idea how much it would cost him to get insurance, if indeed he could even get a quote. That's why he was uninsured but these toe rags don't care about that. they're only interest is in what they can pinch of and free load and they don't give a damn what damage they do or what lives they destroy.

The ploblems is that the thieves . Are not worried about getting caught. Because there punishment is not is not that bad if they do. I say they should be made to brake rocks with a big hammer for 12 hours a day and get if whipped if they stop then for the other 12 hours get lock up in a empty cell . The crime rate would rocket down then in stead of putting them in a 4 star prison with pool tables table tennis gym with a tv in there room

I hope he manages to get back on his feet.

I also hope he does take out insurance especially with the premises being so easy to access - however due to that fact it may cost a bomb to insure!

@Miss.N My thoughts exactly, may cost a fortune to insure due to the location and also been targeted before...such a same as a honest man trying to earn a living get penalised..
