Police Appeal After Suspected Homophobic Attack

Tuesday November 12 2013

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after two men were assaulted in a suspected homophobic attack in a Barnsley bar.

The two men were on the dancefloor of Digital on Wellington Street at around 12.45am on October 27 when the incident occurred.

One 24-year-old man was headbutted and the other, aged 32, was punched in the face by the same unknown man.

The suspect is described as a white man between 6ft and 6ft 4in tall, of a stocky build and in his late 20s.

The two men, from Barnsley, believe they were attacked due to their sexuality.

South Yorkshire Police is treating the incident as a homophobic hate crime.

Witnesses, or anyone with information, should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number 691 of November 12, 2013.

It's disgusting hope they catch the beast that did this I saw photos of one of the men and it's disgraceful it's the 21st century there shouldnt any problems oath anyone's sexuality. Who ever hurt them is a closed minded cave man

How do you know they were attacked because of their sexuality? Unless and until the individual responsible is caught and questioned, you're just jumping on the bandwagon and making assumptions.

Reply Posted by WAB on Wednesday November 13 2013 at 11:16
Dave, it's not us being sensationalistic or anything like that - the police have told us they're treating the matter as a homophobic hate crime. That's from them, not us...

This is disgusting how they were treated because of there sexuality, lets spread this and get them caught

Hi Diane, I hope your friend is doing ok and I just wanted to pass on that Barnsley LGBT Forum support people after any homophobic attack if they need it and we work closely with the police to support people. If they need to contact anyone all the details are on www.barnsleylgbtforum.org.uk

Total disgrace people should be allowed to enjoy a night out without the fear of being attacked by a mindless bully just because they're gay
If he was such the big tough guy why doesn't he put his hand up and admit to what hes done and face the punishment complete low life bully

Reply Posted by jon on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 17:24
Dave if you read the article theres a clue in there and whether it was linked to their sexuality or not violence like that cannot be tolerated in a public place
If it was a member if your family would your response be the same ?

Reply Posted by Dave on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 17:51
Jon, I absolutely agree. There is no place for this sort of violence anywhere, on anybody. I just dislike the bandwagon jumping from people automatically assuming that because they were gay then that must be the reason they were attacked. They think that was the reason. It doesn't mean that they are right.

Reply Posted by Poppy on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 18:48
Im against violence..but if the two men were black, the headline would have read Police appeal after racist attack..still wrong what the thug did,,

Reply Posted by Dave on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 19:53
And I'd say exactly the same but substitute sexuality for colour. It's idiotic and it feeds paranoia. It's the sort of bull$h!t the Daily Mail prints to get people offended on behalf of others. Wait until the police have done what they need to do before claiming that these men were attacked simply because they were gay.

Reply Posted by WAB on Wednesday November 13 2013 at 11:18
Again, Dave, see my last comment. It's not us printing 'bullshit' to feed paranoia at all - I reiterate the fact that the police have given us this information and they're treating it as a hate crime.

Reply Posted by Dave on Wednesday November 13 2013 at 17:47
Sorry WAB, we appear to be misunderstanding each other. I'm not saying that you have printed bullshit. Your article headline clearly states that it is suspected. I have no problem with what was written in the article. I'm on about the comments section. Hope that clears things up.

Dave I agree with you, unfortunately the social media can be very provocative, mis- leading and one-sided. Often to sensationalise a story and usually to create controversy. It does'nt mean he was attacked because of his sexuality, a person of different ethnics being attacked doesnt automatically mean its because of their ethnicity this can be said for Religion, age, dress, sense etc etc. Its all about Media causing segregation drama. The guy was badly beaten that should be enough to cause outrage and concern.

Reply Posted by WAB on Wednesday November 13 2013 at 11:19
The police has given us this information. It hasn't in any way been moulded by us to create sensationalism. The police press release is virtually unchanged. Very offensive when we're simply doing our jobs in the hope to catch whoever's responsible... Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

Reply Posted by Anon on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 18:40
Maybe the bully would like to date one or both Of the Gay Men concerned,he may be Gay himself and doesn't want his family and friends to know about his sexuality

Reply Posted by Anon on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 19:30
I know the guy who was attacked and maybe he should look at himself and stopping getting spannered when he goes out. Maybe he provoked the wrong person this time

Reply Posted by out of order on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 19:46
mr or mrs anon...not called for..doesn.t matter what you look like or dress like..no need for violence..

Reply Posted by janet on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 19:44
i know both of the men , they are work colleagues of mine and wether its colour creed or sexuality either way it shouldnt, and cannot be tolerated . 2 innocent men having a fab night out should not be subjected to any attack whatsoever. the person responsible , quite obviously has no morals .and is nothing more than an animal . while the injuries to the two young men will heal , the mental scars will take a while longer, and as for the other poor excuse of a human being , he needs help before he does something worse !!!!!!!!!!!

Reply Posted by Kyle on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 21:40
Dear anon. Wether the person u are refering to goes out and gets spannered as u call it. There is stil no need for this type of violence just because of his sexuality.

These 2 guys are really good friends of mine and wouldn't hurt anyone . just leave them alone xxxxx

Reply Posted by Luke on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 23:07
Gay or not these 2 warm hearted people were attacked by someone with no respect. Its not as simple as randomly selecting someone to beat up. This mindless individual had a reason and until hes questioned we wont know. Top and bottom of it is attacking someone is wrong they should be caught.

Barnsley has come such a long way over the past few years. It has had its 5th pride and on the whole attitudes have changed towards the LGBT community. Looking at the figures hate crime against the LGBT community look like they have gone up but more people are now reporting it, the police are working closely with the LGBT forum to address the issues that have raised but it wont stop idiots doing what they do. The comments on the whole are really supportive and encouraging and I wish the two lads involved the very best

Homosexuality isn't the reason it's an excuse these vile bullies use, it could be race, religion, that they came from another town. Whatever they can use to fuel their own hatred as an excuse for violence.

Sad twisted idiots that get their kicks from beating up people - that's real deviance. The thug mentality,

I hope the two lads attacked are ok

Well well let me tell you a story about 4 weeks ago I was in chennels which am a regular and I was getting pestered by a young tall thin lad with dark hair hope this does not describe your friend and let mi tell ya he was following me about into toilet too at the same time the manager pulls me and said to me that this lad had told him I was been homophobic towards him to I laughed and said not said a word to him ,5 mins later this lad approached me asking me if I was gay and basically pestering me so a told him to get out of my face , 5 mins later I went across the road to chambers and he followed me all time staring at me I then told him to leave pub or he was going to get a crack and he left , and this monday night about midnight same lad had rung police outside chambers and said someone had been homophobic against him 3 cop cars came and took him away and dint even come in pub that says it all so this lad deserves everything he gets the trouble causer a take it it's not same person just letting everyone know what's happening in town these days

Well dont post what you dont know about. And no thats not the same person these guys would never do that, they dont shove it down peoples throats they just get on with there friends this guy obviously had a grudge against the boys and used homophobic words to them before doing this so id call it an attack on homophobia

Excellent! The immaturity bursts through yet again. My friend, if you dont like people pointing out your faults then you are most certainly in the wrong job. Should I write to your superiors with a complaint over your attitude? I certainly will should this comment fall to a similar fate.

How many people have been attacked this month in barnsley town centre ? I bet more than just this 1 so why all fuss ? I just dont get it lesson 1 dont drink in town its full of bullys and groups of men & women attacking other men & women who have drunk too much i blame pub landlords a the police more should be done to protect us cctv in pubs would do !!

Reply Posted by Kyle on Wednesday November 13 2013 at 18:19
Can we all just stop posting negative comments n try n help find the person who did this to the poor lads. They are the nicest guys you wud ever want to meet. And are going thru enough without people on ere making accusations. And to neil. I doubt very much that one of the lads who u say was coming onto you is one of the guys who got attacked as both the lads are in relationship together. So u can rule them out. I just think u need to think before u post anything on here. N leave the police to do the investigating ok.

I am sure no one goes out in Town with the intention of getting a good hiding, regardless of any circumstances surrounding the case these two gents were assaulted and had their night ruined, the thug needs catching before another innocent victim is violated

what the hell is wrong with you all ,bickering amongst yourselves, this is not about you, this is about two wonderful human beings minding their own business and getting a beating for it so lets get it in perspective and have less of the slagging thats going off .....for gods sake i thought people grew up when they left school .....some of the comments are so childish so come on , stop bad mouthing especially those of you who dont know my friends !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply Posted by Greg on Thursday November 14 2013 at 00:14
Neil, to say they deserve everything they get for being 'trouble causes', you clearly know either of them, they're nothing like the person you described, it's a disgrace to say they deserve it just from presuming and stereotyping, they keep themselves to themselves, so stay quiet before assuming what happened and what they deserve.

I bet the coward that attacked this man wouldn't do the same in Old Compton Street in Soho on a Saturday night. Go into Comptons or GAY bar and do that and you will get a six foot fella throwing you out of the door. And yes he will be gay.

Reply Posted by Christine on Friday November 15 2013 at 00:20
I see we have the old chestnut of an argument coming out on this thread - 'if they are gay, they must fancy me' - What a load of bollocks. No darling he DOES NOT FANCY YOU. Its like saying that I as a hetrosexual women fancies every man. Rubbish (actually I looking for a fella; must be a runner, in an athletics club and can run 10K in less than 35 minutes - thank you)

Its about people attacking other people for the sheer hell of it ! Regardless of who what or where they are Barnsley is a great place to be the type of people who attack others because they have issues or cant handle the beer are not wanted here .shop all concerned and nightclub owners get some decent cctv cameras installed if you really want to make a difference! And encourage staff to be more vigilant . ...just a thought
