Dad Denies Murdering Son At Trial

Monday November 11 2013

A DAD accused of murdering his 11-month-old son blamed the fatal injuries on the family dog.

Little Kadan Beaumont died in hospital from head injuries.

Sheffield Crown Court was told Michael Beaumont, 29, sent a photo of his son's injuries to Helen Barnes, Kadan's mum, while she was at work.

A message with the picture read: "Look at my head mummy. Naughty Mia knocked me down the steps in the garden. I cut my neck as well."

Beaumont told the same story to friends and paramedics who were called to the house when Kadan collapsed the following day.

Robert Smith QC, prosecuting, said: "He told them Kadan had been knocked down the steps by the dogs the day before."

The tot was found to have two recent fractures of the skull, bleeding in his eyes and on the surface of the brain as well as multiple bruises to his head and face.

He died at Sheffield Chidlren's Hospital on September 28, 2011.

Mr Smith said expert evidence would show that Kadan had been subjected to violence from when he was two months old.

"The cause of his collapse that morning was not due to any incident involving being knocked over by a dog.

"His collapse and death was due to trauma to the brain caused by someone striking or throwing him against some surface shortly before the emergency services were called."

Beaumont and Barnes, 28, a teaching assistant, were living at Chapel Street, Hoyland Common. He was caring for Kadan while Barnes was at work.

The prosecution say Barnes, who has a degree in early child studies, failed to seek medical attention for Kadan.

Kadan was taken to his GP on December 10, 2010 when he was seven weeks old after coughing up blood.

A week later he was taken to hospital with a 'cauliflower' ear which a doctor thought may have been caused by a punch. The medic said 'there was a high index of suspicion' of non-accidental injury.

Witnesses who saw Kadan covered in bruises in the street with Beaumont the day before his death were shocked at the youngster's appearance and one said the tot had a 'blank' expression.

Mr Smith said: "No responsible parent would have ignored those injuries."

Beaumont denies murder and causing or allowing the death of a child while Barnes denies allowing the death of a child and cruelty to a person under 16.

The trial continues.

In court evidence was given by a neighbour saying she had previously seen him slam the poor child's head on her concrete kitchen floor. Saying 'he's got to learn'.
Evil, evil man!

Holy, you say a neighbour saw him slam the child's head on her concrete floor. Do you know if this neighbour phoned social services? If they didn't, I'm afraid in my book, they are as bad as the parents because they let this abuse carry on when it could've been stopped earlier!

What a b*****d. How could anyone even dream of doing that to such a small child. Like someone said previously he will get his comeuppance inside, I only hope they torture him like he did that poor little boy before they finish him off. Rip Kaden...let the Angel's look after you now x

This is going to keep happening until the punishment is increased.... I mean.... What's a few years inside if you have the mind to kill a child? It's free rent, electricity, heating, water, meals on the table, "social" time. It's pathetic and disgusting and the government are failing all these poor babies/children because it should be a life for a life after punishment of torture! That's no more than any of these monsters deserve...

It makes me feel physically sick when I hear horrific stories like this . Don't think they're even human . They should make them feel the horrendous pain that poor little boy must have felt " subject to violence from being 2 months old " what are the families , neighbours , health visitors , social services , police doing to protect these innocent babies ...good nite god bless fly high with the angels kadan xxxxxxxxxx

Sadly Social Services and Police are not good at recognising real problems. My own experience in Barnsley has shown me serious problems. Social Services, Police and Courts are misguided and ignorant and it was only a matter of time before things like this happen.

Bring back the death sentence for all child killers ...rip little one.

Quite pleased that this person has pleaded not guilty, the only downside being the cost to the tax payer for the trial but in this case well justified. Assuming found guilty, the not guilty plea will count further against in suming up and sentencing.

A witness at the trial of a man accused of murdering his own baby son told Sheffield Crown Court the child looked as though he had been beaten up by Mike Tyson.

Michael Beaumont is accused of the murder of his 11-month-old son Kadan.

Sharon Laver, who was giving evidence at Beaumont’s trial, said she had called at his home after her friend Kay Cunliffe rang her to say she was concerned about the child.

Ms Laver went to the gate at the bottom of Beaumont’s garden in Chapel Street, Hoyland, Barnsley.

She shouted to gain his attention and Beaumont came out holding the child in his arms.

She could see Kadan had bruises to his head as well as under his eyes, and that his lip was split.

She said: “It looked as though he had been beaten up by Mike Tyson.

“ I told Mikey to get him seen at the hospital.

“If it were my child I would have taken him to hospital straight away.”

Ms Laver asked Beaumont what had happened to Kadan, and he claimed that the dog had knocked him over in the garden near the trampoline and he had banged his head.

The child was not taken to hospital.

He died the next day from massive head injuries which, the prosecution says, were caused just hours before his death.

Ms Laver said that, on another occasion, she had seen Beaumont as he ‘slammed’ Kadan down onto a concrete floor in her kitchen.

When she asked why he did it she said Beaumont replied that he was stressed and added: “He has to learn.”

Ms Laver said she told Beaumont she thought his treatment of the child was harsh, and warned him if he was to do anything like it again he would not be welcome in her home.

Beaumont, aged 28, from Pitsmoor, denies murder.

Kadan’s mother Helen Barnes, 27, denies cruelty to a child by neglecting to seek medical assistance.

The trial continues.

The mother of this poor little angel is a bloody teaching assistant!!! I hope she has lost her job. If she lets this happen to her own child, what risks are children under whilst in her care???
As for the monster of a so called father, I hope he dies a slow painful death just like he subject this poor child to. This is so so sad.
R.i.p angel xx

Makes me sick knowing no-one didn't ring sociak services seeing the poor child like that and more to the point if the hospital thought the childs ear was caused by a punch then why didn't they inform social services etc: i know it was 2011 but it still happens

Doctors, neighbours, family etc. Why daren't any one report anybody these days?.. If i saw a child being neglected or showed signs of abuse, i would have no hesitation in going to the police!!!... And if the low life scum are proved guilty i hope they get beat up in prison, and then die a horrible slow death....R.I.P little man.... i would have loved you with all my heart..x.x.x.x

Tbh I hate it when people go on bout social services n police not recognising that a mother or father or both are treating their child badly at the end ov the day the a mother and father should not be treating their child the way they do it's not the police or social services fault at all n if one parent is doing wrong by there child then the other parent should take the child n run for the hills and protect there defenseless child
