Sir Steve Praises Council's Library Efforts

THE leader of Barnsley Council has praised the work done to ensure all 17 of Barnsley's libraries remain open.

Sir Steve Houghton told cabinet members that the Future Library Strategy was a 'first class piece of work'.

It means all the borough's libraries are to remain open and only half will see a small reduction in their opening hours.

Cllr Houghton said libraries having a future in Barnsley was good news, particularly in light of other local councils having to cut services and, in some cases, close libraries.

He said: "At a time when we're under huge pressure and have to get costs down and keep a pretty good service, it deserves praise not criticism and I want to congratulate everyone for their involvement. It's a very emotive area."

The new opening times came into effect on November 4.

If it had not been for local up roar there would not have been many libraries left for mr Houghton to be taking As Usual any praise for, because they would have nearly all have been closed.

Sir Steve could have mentioned the volunteers in dispatches. I'd like to know how many volunteers are keeping our libraries going, or indeed how many are keeping Barnsley going. All these cut backs are making the Big Society the biggest 'employer' round here.

Wonder if he admitted that they are wanting to demolish the main library and move it into a building not fit for purpose and with no timescale for a temporary move .and also with no firm idea as to where a new one will be built. Will he support the hands off our library campaign ...

Yeah let's knock down main library and build a new building that will look rubbish like they have everywhere else why not just refurb old buildings and keep some of our town wouldn't cost half as much as knocking down and starting from scratch so many beautiful old buildings from this town gone
