People To Be Charged For Using Once Free Helpline

Friday November 8 2013

VULNERABLE people have been told they must now pay for a previously free helpline service.

Careline is currently used by more than 1,300 people in Barnsley and from next April those who want to continue using it must pay £3.24 a week.

Careline provides a round-the-clock monitoring service to vulnerable people - many of them elderly - who want to feel more protected in their own homes.

It's provided by the council's Independent Living at Home Service (ILAHS) and was previously funded by the government's Supporting People fund.

Funding is likely to cease due to government spending cuts.

One Careline user in Hoyland, who didn't want to be named, said it was worrying that funding cuts were hitting such an important service.

"People do use it and rely on it," she said. "If you fall or become ill, it ensures that an ambulance or relatives are called."

Cllr Jenny Platts, cabinet spokesman, said: "It is, of course, with reluctance this will become a paid service from April 2014. However, we will try to keep the charge as low as possible."

The move to a paid service will see the introduction of the latest and most simple to use assistive living technology from Bosch Healthcare.

This is ridiculous, only the very vulnerable use this valuable service and many wont be able to pay out of their meagre pensions - we'll end up with old people on the floor for hours unable to call for help! This happened to my grandad before the careline and he was down for hours before he managed to call for help. The careline is the only security some old people have.

what this story does not say is that people knew it was for a set period only and this was going to happen. There are a lot of people who pay for this service already who are on the same pension as the people that get it free. The service costs money to run as its open 365 days per year 24 hrs a day and if the people need it there are carers that go in and help them or send an ambulance if it is needed. In every area of the country that has this service you have to pay towards it.....it is nothing new

£3.24 a week on top of the £14..04p a month that we already pay for having the lifeline =£168.48 then goes up to £ 207.36 a Year and it will be day light robbery...for the people who have this service in their homes Talk about hitting the pensioners and vulnerable people, who really need this service, What a joke this government is. I wonder how many won't be able to afford this increase and say come and take it out of my home? Then it will be who would have thought it when folks are found laying on the floor and left in dire need because they couldn't call for help when needed........Hell I thought that was what lifeline was all about NOT how much it cost extra per week?? Its about time the government were taken to task about this as we don't get an increase of £3.24 a week in pensions to enable us to pay for all these extra increases that are happing on a daily basis. Come on David Cameron I bet neither you, nor your Parents will be stuck and unable to pay for help because of all these darn increases

Chris, the £3.24 per week is for the people that are getting it for free at the current time, not on top for the people that are paying it already

look im sorry i know i wont be popular for saying this but these services should all be means tested,i know there are a few pensioners out there who are genuinely suffering but the majority arn't,you go in m&s one of our more expensive stores, and its full of pensioners buying food and clothes, shoes etc,you go in granada or mecca bingo afternoon or night 7 days a week and its full of pensioners some of who go 4/5 days a week spend £20 a time on cards and then sit there all through bingo moaning they can't afford their heating on and dont know how they are going to manage im not against helping our elderly when they are struggling ,but for gods sake stop pleading poverty constantly when you are leading a decent life, lets make sure the help goes to those who actually need it eh.

Maybe if half of peoples hard earned pensions weren't taken off of them they'd have money to pay for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bet the cost of running the careline is a drop in the ocean compared to the money it has saved the NHS by ensuring speedy assistance. Charging for it & therefore discouraging its use is a false economy.

instead of paying people to breast feed. pump it into our elderly who deserve to be treat like royals

People in Barnsley have been fortunate to recieve this service free of charge. Residents recieve a 24/7 monitoring service. This peace of mind is priceless. The charge is comparable to all other areas for similar service.

oh my god cooeee what kind of heartless, selfish, self centered, human being are you, 10million pounds to a country like ours is nothing it has nothing to do with which country needs help, and all to do with fellow human beings needing help.i hope and pray if ever this country are faced with total devestation the way these poor people are its not left to people with an attitude like yours to decide if they are going to help us or not.when you drink your clean water today go home to a roof over your head, have a decent meal and know your family is alive and well just remember these people dont have any of this
