Former School Site Set For Major Redevelopment

Wednesday November 6 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A FORMER school site in Barnsley could be transformed into a £10million shopping complex.

Rothstone Estates has big plans for the site on which Foulstone School once stood in Darfield, with supermarket giants Sainsbury's and Lidl having already agreed terms.

The application, which is set to be submitted to Barnsley Council, will create around 80 jobs if the plans are approved.

The Nanny Marr Road development will also include a 180-space car park and a mix of two and three-bedroom houses.

A number of public consultation sessions to give residents the chance to view the plans are being held in Darfield this month.

The managing director of Rothstone Estates, Mark Rothery, said: "This would provide a much-needed boost to local retail facilities as well as a significant number of jobs.

"Currently, Darfield residents have limited choice, so many people have to travel out of the village to shop. The scheme would provide access to shops which meet the needs of the local community."

The council should quickly agree to this as DARFIELD feels cut off from rest of Barnsley with lots of its residents long complaining of very shabby bus service from stagecoach who seen deaf to complaints against them. Creating more jobs in Darfield is a massive must too. Only one supermarket in Darfield now and always over priced needs some competition :-)

The Coop has a monopoly being the only shop in Darfield it is overpruced and understocked with poor service. Anything to replace this would be great. My advice is to hurry and build before the land is claimed as there are already ponies in there!!

Rubbish shops wiv no customer services . Rubbish buses wiv no wombwell services on bellbrooke any ,why did they take 67 bus off in first place , now we ave nothing ???? Wot a load of @£&@!'bkm

The majority of residents living on bellbrooke are families and most houses all now have at least one car on the drive. Therefore there is no reason for a bus to come down the road. I am pleased they have stopped this, it was a nightmare at times meeting a bus on the road and they come down way too fast it wouldn't have been long before a child was knocked down and killed by it. The residents on rose avenue use the bus so why not let the bus go down their street where there is no cars!

That'll be the local bakery and cafe etc literally across the road closing down, it'll be a shame but i do think it's just what Darfield needs especially for the people who are having to travel out of the village to get what they need.

As an elderly resident I feel I have been abandoned by the Co-op I can't walk all the way up to the new store, the busses are few & far between so we desperately need a supermarket. Its sad to say but the closure of the school & loss of the custom of the kids was always going to effect GT the Cafe & the bakery but the bakery is not helping proving a viable service by closing even earlier/half days etc. So when the new stores do finally open i feel they will lose even more custom so may well end up closing but if they can't/won't compete then so be it!

cant see shops like that doing great deal to be honest. the co op will be handy for the people living up that end. as someone quite rightly pointed out, the businesses up there will go. perhaps even the papershop?. the jobs will most likely be given to the you know whos??..the new ethnic minorities??..or not.!! local people. darfield is dead. it needs something to replace the pits. proper jobs. with proper wages. and proper holidays. ive never seen place go into demise as quickly. its such a shame. cos it used to be a fabulous place to be.

lets hope this little villiage can take all hammer from heavy goods vehicles ect, it could be good for darfield tho ,lets hope gypsies dont mess it up with the shoplifting ,drug dealing ect because at present darfield is run by gypsies selling drugs to idiots gangs of youths running round all drugged up smashing estates up and intimidateing people its become a shithole,,so if the start building it wants some right security as building materials ect will be pinched,as local villiage idiots are doing dirty work for gypsies

It's a brilliant idea, will generate work as well! If you haven't got a car it's doubly hard!

I disagree with the last comment. There is nothing wrong with the travelling community. Why you have to blame everything on them is beyond me. Mud & glasshouses comes to mind. I am not a traveller either but im happy to live amongst them. In the dearne & district areas its clear they are deprived & most jobs are low paid. It does need a boost which I welcome. Competition for the coop is good too so they stay competitive with their prices. I definitely welcome the new development as its an eyesore at the moments. Security would be required on any developments these days. This advert alone will attract thieves from all over the place to be ready to try their luck. Not necessarily Darfield residents. Good luck with the project. JMS.

Darfield resident - I too am a darfield resident an I feel you comments are way off the make!!! What residents on bellbrook are 'gypos'? I think you will find it's the settled community that drags darfield down!
There are good and bad in any walk of life to tarnish everyone with the same brush is wrong!

Living in the next village to Darfield and having a friend living in Darfield I can only say that it will be certainly and improvement to this place if a decent supermarket is being built. A provioulsy quiet village is soon turning in a ghost one... hurry up with this new shopping complex. I thought we had it bad in my village ( on the main Barnsley-Doncaster link rd) but Darfield residents are far away from Barnsley to commute in 1st place.

Why do these other businesses have to close? They might get boosted custom, people walking to the new supermarkets might think 'oh whilst I'm here I'll just nip into bakery'.

I will def use the new shops and present ones once this development opens. I currently drive into Wombwell every Saturday morning and never use the shops in Darfield. I would love to use the bakery and café. BRING IT ON!!

im not a resident of darfield anymore but I can honestly say its what it needs a good choice of shops and as for everyone slagging gypsys off they are only human like us the only thing different is some choose to live in caravans ect and not all of them are bad ,and as for the drugs side of things you get that in neally every village now days and it isn't all down to the gypsys

Reply Posted by Jade on Monday November 11 2013 at 21:19
I used to go to Foulstone, honestly the site doesn't look big enough for either of those..

Why does everyone blame Gypsies ? Its not down to them that Darfield has become the Village it has... Gypsies have always been in Darfield & most have them have respect for Darfield folk, its only the odd few thats not. Ive known the Smiths years & they was always respected because they respected us, get a grip freedom of speech!!!
It will be a really good idea for shops to come to Darfield but i wouldnt say that about the houses, they should just build a nice shopping centre, with every day shops.

wendy its become run down because of all the trouble causing gypsies dropping drugs to drug dealers who are shoving them on to the younger ones ,who are then running riot antisocial behavior the gypsies are going about thinking they are the mafia they are just drugged up scum ripping people off and running areas down ,and respectable businesses dont want this gypsies getting big money out of crime

Reply Posted by the truth on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 14:23
so wendy were are all the gypsies getting there money from, nobody as got any money but they have, did darfield post office get robbed a few years ago 100 grand nicked ,did gates get stolen from longbow site ,did museum get its vintage sign stolen unbolted in night ,isnt there any drug dealers in darfield ,i could go on and on listing drug related crime gypsies have no respect for anyone only themselves,if they build a shopping centre there they will rob it blind and by time police arrive it will be old news, the area is run down because there is no policing when was the last time you saw police round darfield, when a man murdered his wife ect probably drug fueled they should put the new shopping centre were it will be respected properly

well i honestly believe that the old school should not have been knocked down or wombwell high school ,they should have been used as night schools ,learning for the disabled ect, what weve got is greedy businesses and a greedy goverment they have built new school on flood land ,what happens if it goes under water again there was nothing wrong with the old schools as for building a new supermarket, people from wombwell will have to go there as there is nothing in wombwell its a ghost town, lets look at grimethorpe were shop lifters are constantly pinching meat from asda ,look at royston cigs stolen recently if they build it they need super security, lets wait and see

Reply Posted by no crime on Tuesday November 12 2013 at 16:51
if the gypsies are getting blame for crime ect perhaps they should do something about it like stopping idiots that do give them a bad name,ie stop them shitting on there doorstep, but i bet nothing changes, goodluck to the supermarket you are going to need it
