Nurse Cautioned After Medication Theft

Thursday October 31 2013

Barnsley Hospital Barnsley Hospital

A BARNSLEY Hospital nurse has been cautioned after stealing medication.

Staff nurse Beverley Jayne Roberts admitted taking prescription and controlled drugs and equipment over two and a half years.

She was sacked by the hospital after a disciplinary hearing in November 2011, but although the matter was reported to the police, the charge was withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service.

A Nursing and Midwifery Council panel found her fitness to practise was impaired by her misconduct and imposed a three-year caution order - although she is still allowed to nurse.

Roberts was discovered in September 2011 when her estranged husband called the trust saying she had trust medication and equipment at her home.

Roberts, who has had an otherwise unblemished career since qualifying as a nurse in 2007, had taken prescription and controlled drugs including fluconazole capsules, paracetamol, codeine phosphate, zopiclone, buscopan, doxycycline, furosemide, ondansetron, diclofenac and tramadol.

She had also taken an old blood pressure monitor and an electric heat pad.

She said she would often put the medication in her pockets as she cleared patients' lockers following their discharge from hospital.

She put them in a drawer at home and 'forgot' about them. When she noticed, she said she returned the medication and had no intention of using it.

Roberts claimed she had taken the heat pad after suffering from a stiff neck and and the blood pressure monitor after her husband complained of feeling faint.

She had planned to return it as soon as she had used it.

In her evidence, Roberts apologised and accepted her actions were 'completely inappropriate'.

Roberts said she had let her colleagues down and abused the position of trust in which she had been placed.

She said she would never behave in such a way again.

The panel accepted Roberts' assurances that she had learned from her experience and was unlikely to repeat her misconduct.

But it found she had breached a fundamental tenet of the profession, bringing it into disrepute and imposed the caution order which it felt would be sufficient to mark the seriousness of the misconduct.

You never know what kind of people are on the wards. The very people you should be able to trust are not caring for you if there mind is not on the job. Taking medication home and forgetting, seems rather odd. Perhaps there is other stuff not disclosed, who knows. The mind boggles.

its only in our western consumer society that we throw away £millions of medicines every month.. in Africa all unopened drugs and tablets are re-shelfed not like here. She was a "skip rat" taking medicines that were going into the skip. It wasn't really the crime of the century as some people think. Ex husband causing trouble thats all!

Who says she was taking them to sell??? Talk about jumping to conclusions! You have no idea what she was doing with them because it's doesn't say. Sounds like it was made a million times worse by her ex, and as she wasn't struck off I would say that the amount of drugs she had will have been minimal.

I think people want to get a grip and work as a nurse for a week and see what it is like then critisise these things can happen so busy just put stuff in pocket and forget. People should blame the goverment for bringing so much paper work in nurses are so much like receptionist these days there is not enough hands on. Nurses would more rather be hands on than all paper work

@Natele firstly let me set the record straight. I have the greatest respect for Doctors Nurses and any one that's works in the health service.

what I myself and millions of other people are seeing is. Time and time again people young and Elderly are receiving more and in too many cases life changing care with unbelievable results.

If any one employed in the Care or NHS care simply see things going off that are effecting patients they should speck up.

@Janet I don't twitch my curtains every day. I like most people have an opinion that's what this site is about. I also look after my neighbours having had to move into area with supporting housing development due to my wife's sudden illness which resulted in Life Changing time.

We are young compared to the majority of our Neighbours and I gave up a very well paid job to care for my wife full time.

I come on here and debate issues and if I can advise people with my experiences in life which I share with other WABERS. I don't think I own the site.

Having an imposter is not great but I do try and make light hearted banter about it.

Has for you Janet your right I'm off from WABERS thank you to all the people and so called friends I have made.

This was a realise valve for me when I had got my sick wife off to bed etc.

I have never intended to upset people in any way just honest open debates.

kind Regards

I have been a friend of Swifty for many years. They are a hardworking and respectable member of our community.

He has a wide circle of friends and comes into contact with people from all walks of life. He his very passionate and supportive of people in a position less fortunate than himself.

People play a big part in his life and more important, his family. I won't say what employment he was in as someone could recognise and he would not appreciate my thread.

His wife has a life changing illness and does what any loving husband would do.

I'm sorry he says he won't post any more he his self opinionated but one thing for sure. He puts his Family and friends before himself.
