Bedroom Tax Campaigners Spread Word

Thursday October 31 2013

CAMPAIGNERS against the so-called bedroom tax met with affected residents last week.

Dearne councillor Ralph Sixsmith, who was at the meeting at the Golden Nugget Club, Goldthorpe, says he believes the government have been on a mission to 'vilify people on benefits' and that the bedroom tax is an extension of that.

And he warned people there is a discretionary payment for people who are struggling.

"The discretionary payment is there for people. We know what people can't afford but we need to know what they can afford," he said.

"The main problem is that people aren't talking until they've got into real problems but I understand that, that's human nature."

He added they had been told of one story where a disabled woman was being taxed for an extra room.

"The spare room was tiny and used for charging up her wheelchair. We got it squashed but the information came from David Cameron's office, not locally."

Another woman, who attended the meeting, but didn't wish to be named, said that she's been forced to resort to visiting food banks in the 'heat or eat' dilemma that has been brought about.

Campaigner Dave Gibson, of Barnsley Trade Council, helped organise the meeting. He said: "We welcome Barnsley Council's decision to oppose the bedroom tax and to call for its abolition but we think they need to do more.

"We want to see them declare a policy of no evictions for tenants in arrears because of the bedroom tax, and we would like them to declare that all so-called spare rooms smaller than 70 square feet should not count as bedrooms.

"The Tories are losing the argument over the bedroom tax. They wanted to use it to divide us between what they called strivers and skivers.

"But we believe our campaign is changing public opinion."

Perfect place to hold a meeting with the work shy, a club, means they don't have to out of their way.

Nice one having it in a club these people make me laugh most people i know including elderly and unemployed are not that bad off they want to get priorities right pay your bills and food first instead of buying booze, cigs, weed, ugg boots, sky, benidorm holidays each year.
We work and after all the bills including rent, council tax, prescriptions, dentistry etc and no holiday for last 5 yrs if these people added all these costs onto their benefits they are prob better off than us.
In some certain hardship cases fight but the rest stop whinging and whining and pay up like the rest off us
Rant over

Im sick of hearing about these dole dossers. Live in the real world and get it paid like the rest of us. Private renters have had to pay it for years now.

Don't know what private renters have been paying for years, but the bedroom tax only started this year and it only applies to council house tenants. Private renters next?

Its not just council. Private tennants are having their housing benefit reduced as well. My wife and I had always worked until last year. Then I got Ill and the company she worked for closed. We waited until all our savings were gone and we had no choice but to claim. We don't drink and havnt had a night out in years. The bedroom tax has meant that we have to top up over a hundred pounds a month out of just my ESA as they said she didn't qualify for job seakers allowance duty to something to do with her national insurance contributions. We didn't fight it as we class these benefits as a privalage not a right. I've worked since in was 16 and this is the first time I've ever needed help. People saybive paid into the system for years so I'm untitled but I don't agree. I havnt earned it so don't like spending it. Problem is that the bedroom tax hits those who can't afford it as well as those just scrounging. They say move to a 1 bedroom place...there arnt any. Small places hover shot up in price so that list the same rent as larger places. They pay that tho but not if you have anything spare space wise. It needs to be adjusted on a case by case basis and advice given to those affected not just told tough, find a way to cope.

Thousand if not millions of working people have been conned with the latest Welfare Changes. The biggest injustice is for working people that both people work and has paid there taxes and National Insurance Contributions all Ther working lives.

Let me try and explain. If a husband or wife or partner become ill and are off work for 365days they receive CONTRIBUTION based "Employment Support Allowance"

After 365 days one year If your husband or wife are still unable to work. And they worth 24 hours per week or you have £16000 in savings your sick pay STOPS after 365 days.

That's nearly £400 a month that's just what this Coalition Government has done behind the back door of voters. And supported by LABOUR.

So the next time people slag the GENUINE unemployed you yourself may find your self in the same position due to illness.

Private tenants have been under the local Housing allowance for years and before that it was restricted by the rent officer, council tenants have had it easy for years if you can't afford to pay the under occupancy charge make some changes, that's what us people in the real world have to do.

i am not affected by the supposed bedroom tax. i live in a private rented house. yes i am on benefits. but i dont want to be. i dont agree with the get money for free idea. i think all people should work for their money. bring back the work houses. create more litter picking jobs. i think its a good idea about the proposed scheme the government was going to bring in where people on jsa have to mandatory work to receive their benefits. i have seen people in the street that some are genuine and cant work and then their are others that spend their benefits on drugs and alcohol and then say they cant afford to pay the bedroom tax. so i have a message for them, CUT OUT THE LUXURIES AND YOU CAN AFFORD TO PAY!!! i feel sorry for the people that are genuinely struggling because we have to live in a society of SCROUNGERS!!! X

i have been in a similar situation so i know what it feels like. i had found times hard but i never once had luxuries, i couldnt afford them. so i know how it feels to be genuinly poor. unlike the drunks and smackheads i see in town on a day to day basis, seeing tax payers money spent on stuff like that just makes me so angry. best thing for them is bringing in a work for your benefits scheme and if these people dont turn up they lose their benefits. i know it might be tough but get a grip and GET A JOB!!!! Well...... the BIG news tonight is that Labour lost the vote on the bedroom tax after wasting an entire day in the House of Commons that could actually have been used productively!

Why do I say 'wasted' I hear you ask? There were 252 votes against Labours motion, and as has been highlighted by Labour EVERYWHERE they could how much they oppose this spare room subsidy that (they forget to tell you) THEY actually introduced when they had a majority government... they would have raised the DEAD to defeat the coalition .... IF you can believe a single word they say! BIG IF eh?

Well considering that Labour have 257 MPs and could have WON the vote today and actually done what they said... where were they? 31 Labour MPs failed to vote to repeal the Bedroom Tax that they claim to hate so much?

Could it be that this whole thing has been an opportunistic and hypocritical publicity stunt by Labour to try to swing the public their way? Are the electorate THAT stupid? Really?

Lamo, what do you think of that Fran and the rest of bedroomTax protesters?
