UNISON 'Outraged' By Wage

Thursday October 24 2013

UNISON has said it's 'outraged' to discover that the external consultant brought in by Barnsley Council to implement £2million of cuts is being paid a whopping £11,000 per month.

Dave Finnegan has drawn up plans to cut 44 front-line lobs, including refuse collectors and highways maintenance workers and to downgrade a number of other posts at the council’s Smithies depot.

While addressing a meeting of the workforce this week, Mr Finnegan was asked about his £12,000 salary and his reply was to say that he is not paid £12,000 a month and it is in fact just over £11,000.

UNISON branch secretary Brian Steele said: "Mr Finnegan’s comment was insensitive and ill-judged. He was addressing hard-working people who do essential front-line jobs and who are facing redundancy and pay cuts of up to £4,700 per year as a result of his proposals.

"His comments were highly inflammatory at a time when UNISON is balloting members on the proposed cuts. It's highly likely that his comments may influence the outcome of our ballot."

It's discusting is what it is. There was a time years back when the people of Barnsley would never have put up with this sort of thing and we'd have ousted the bloke out by protesting in the streets. What has our town come to when this sort of story breaks and nothing gets done and the stories keep coming?. We are the people of Barnsley, without us to support it our history steeped town will become nothing but an entry in a history book. Make a stand!

I find this absolutely disgusting, who did they say brought him in to implement the cuts, Barnsley Council !. Well let's start by getting rid of a few Councilors, that'll save a bob or two.If the workers go on strike it'll have a lot more impact on the community than if the councilors did .

Yet another example of BMBC wasting money on "consultants".
I take it BMBC do not have a HR department let alone a HR department that can think for itself.

Bragging that he gets £11000 a month when people are losing their jobs is absolutely obscene in my opinion.

Just another RIP OFF way of wasting our Tax money and having the audacity to say it's not 12,000 but 11,000 is just disgusting for ONE Month sorry but it is just TOTALLY unjustified and UN-WORTHY of OUR tax payers money to pay this kind of money to one person for a CONSULTANCY on peoples Jobs and Lively hoods. Talk about FAT cats this is just taking the michael I think. Most of the Poeple of Barnsley could tell you whats wrong with most things rather than pay ONE person £11,000 pounds.

Another fat cats snout in the trough and which councillors got backhanders for the favour. We Barnsley folk will stand "egg under cap" and we never learn, its time we made a stand and used our voice!!

This blokes been around for ages hacking up the services under the noses of the unions, councillors and chief executive of the council. I can't believe unison has only just discovered this as all staff under the axe have known what he's been on for a long time...... double the previous boss!!!! No one dare put their head above the parapet for fear of been singled out. Everyone is complaining over state of roads and wakey road in particular, well it's because staff are already cut to the bone and things are set to get much worse once he's gone!
And yes, stick this consultants name in to google along with "York" or "Wales" and make your own mind up if he is suitable to be working in Barnsley. After all once he's chopped up the services and gone on to his next job it's someone else's problem to clear up the mess but something else for his cv. We are all doooooooomed!

UNISON are outraged? How can they explain that they have known this information and sat on it for months allowing these people to come in to assist Human Resources and others to restructure the council. They will have had to agree to these people coming in first. UNISON have negotiated with them to reduce structures to make staff and their members redundant. Don't be fooled with what Brian Steele says after all he's on £27k per year and uses members subs for his own campaigns.

It doesn't work like that old bean.
The "consultant" will have made his recommendations and proposals to the relevant HR department and the regional officer will NOT have direct contact with said "consultant".

If the council appoint a consultant to consult on restructuring them there isn't a great deal that the regional officer can do apart from complain to HR.
As the "consultant" isn't directly employed by the council then they would not have to inform unison of the consultants involvement.

As for "unison will have negotiated to make staff redundant" what a ridiculous statement, a unions primary objective is to save as many jobs as is possible, not to be going round giving the council bullets to fire.

UNISON have consistently raised objections to the use of consultants within Barnsley Council.

We have released a press statement in this case because we believed that Mr Finnegans comments, attitude and behaviour had crossed the line of common decency.

Yes people have been made redundant in the Council but let's be realistic, when the Tories are cutting hundreds of millions of pounds from Local Government budgets, how on earth could the unions stop ALL job losses?

The point of UNISON as a trade union is to ensure that the redundancy processes are absolutely necessary i.e. there are no alternatives to offset any mandatory redundancies such as job share, flexible working, voluntary severance and early retirement etc and that the process is fair.

All UNISON members who are affected are involved in the consultation process and any concerns can be raised with us to look into.

Reply Posted by Concerned on Thursday October 24 2013 at 22:13
FOI already done on other Interim Exec Directors. Expose them all. There is more than Finnegan on £11k per month just here to close our services and get rid of jobs.

Unbelievable, .............one months wage could cover 2 prt time nurses!!!!!! 144000 a year could pay for 20 odd nurses!!!! And this prick is in a job to reduce the council wage bill? How can we justify paying this when even cameron (another tail end!!!) Don't get that much for burying the country?

Sounds very much like life 30+ years ago when Thatcher (spit) brought in Ian MacGregor, to do the same with dockers, steelmen & miners. I thought Barnsley Council was LABOUR run too.

Well as a member of Unison and involved in these cuts I actually see and get more info out of the GMB rep!!! How can a union be impartial anyway when they give money to the political parties?? Go figure!

All we know is too little to late. Why was'nt this consultants wage brought up a long time ago as well as his past in other authorities, as everyone else seemed to know about it except the union?

I don't think people will realise the knock on effect until it hits - bad winters, flooding, loosing new development, loosing good, trained and knowledgable staff. It will end up costing more (and take longer to recover) in the long run!

Standard tactic at BMBC. Bring in consultants to trash efforts of employees resulting in some staff leaving (& therefore saving on redundancy costs ), some go off sick, others hang on as near retirement. Service to rate payers gets worse. Unison are well aware that there are many more consultants doing much damage to morale of their members but seem powerless to do anything.
