Former South Yorkshire Police Officer Sentenced

Wednesday October 16 2013

A FORMER South Yorkshire Police officer has been sentenced to six years in prison after stealing nearly £23,000 from a 94-year-old woman.

Jon Webb, 45, was given the jail term at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday morning.

At an earlier hearing on September 10, he pleaded guilty to 11 offences of theft, fraud and forgery.

The offences took place in Sheffield between June and December 2012. Nine of the charges related to a 94-year-old woman whom Webb had befriended in August 2012 and from whom he subsequently stole nearly £23,000.

Webb, from Millhouses, Sheffield, resigned in May this year from his position as a police constable during the investigation.

Detective Superintendent Terry Mann said: "Sadly, Jonathan Webb was a former officer but I consider him a criminal who fully deserves the sentence imposed upon him.

"I know I speak for all of his former colleagues that he was an utter disgrace to the uniform. He has brought shame to the whole of South Yorkshire Police and the police service nationally.

"He preyed on a most vulnerable victim, choosing to steal her money in a most devious and deceitful way.

"I wish to publically express my thanks to the public for coming forward with information in this case."

Oh so they're not trying to make a proper example of someone formally in a position of authority that abused their power?!!

How is this a deterrent to ensure we get proper honest coppers on our streets?

Yes it is a disgrace that this man did what he did but how many times must we here the really silly comments about the Police by people who to be frank would be incapable of doing their job and who probably steal, lie, cheat in their everyday lives and who usually have criminal records?

£55 000 a year pension ha would be great if it were true, you seriously think coppers get that kind of pension. Makes me laugh the attitudes on here, one bent cop, so they must all be. One benefit fraudster so they all must be. Lack of intelligence in Barnsley.

Pretty heavy sentence for the theft of 23,000 pounds! It's heavy because he was a cop and quite rightly so! I just think that if it had been a junkie who had taken the money he would not have got half of the sentence that the cop has got. There are more scumbags on the streets than there are scumbag cops! Let's see heavy sentences for every scumbag!

I don't think bent coppers go to a normal prison. There is a special one in the Derbyshire area just for them and other bent officials that would be most at risk in prison.

I hope his pension has gone with his job and he is made to pay back the money. What a disgrace the scum of the earth .

P you are misinformed. There is no special prison, cops go to normal prison like everyone else.
He is scum and the fact he did this as a cop makes him worse. However, I don't understand how people make this a "all the police are bent" issue. Doesn't the fact that COPS investigated this one bent cop and brought him to justice and then his own Police force named and shamed him show otherwise.
Folks needs to get a grip and look at other countries around the world and realise what a truly corrupt police force looks like because we have a bunch of Mary Poppin's and gentlemen in comparison.

Bit of disclosure here. Was out drinking with him the Friday before he got sentenced. Only met him two or three times and he was out with a family member. She is very vulnerable and is seriously ill. She did not know about his crime and he was actually talking about going on holiday next year!! Very plausible and confident man and can well understand how he could 'con' an old woman. Certainly did me. He said he was an ex copper but now out of the force. Never crossed my mind that he was bent. More I think about it more I think he went out that day as a big p@ss up before he went down. Even when very drunk (and we were) he never mentioned the sentence. On top of what he did with a vulnerable elderly person he has left my family member in bits. He has been in my house and been made welcome. He will not be again. Conned us all . Hence the user name.
