Town Centre Improvements Get Underway

Thursday October 10 2013

MORE town centre improvements have got underway in Barnsley.

For the next seven weeks that work will include upgrading and renewing traffic lights, installing new ducting and new street lights on Church Street, Shambles Street and parts of Market Hill.

The work will also mean Church Street being closed between Eastgate and Sadler Gate on October 13 and Regent Street closed at its junction with Church Street on October 20.

The second phase of the work will start in January next year and will include re-paving and re-kerbing streets in the same material as the recently completed Barnsley Pals Centenary Square.

Roads will also be resurfaced and there will be new seats and litter bins.

We can provide art to every side. The whole place will be a picture.
It isn't fair that people can only have art on one side of Barnsley.
I agree with collet's "art a tarn " campaign. Let's Art the hell out of it.

I see what you did Mrs. Robinson......

However I understand the sentiment from Collet, the spending on the Town Centre is all well and good but there are areas outside the centre that need the TLC a lot more. Its time for the council to treat all areas of Barnsley the same.

They will do all the work, re paving etc then a couple months afte that they will dig it all up again to lay new pipes, there is no structure to the town council or planning... what the hell are you going to do about all the empty shops in the centre and also on shambles street... For god sake please get a grip and if you cant then get the hell of the council and put some people there that know what they are doing

Fao Amanda and TheWomble - Shambles St (I assume you mean the old YEB showrooms) will soon go. Infact that area of Shambles St will be unrecognisable in 2 years.
On another note there is structure to how highways works are planned as contractors have to 'book space' on the highway and can protect that area of work for 12 months from other programmed work by other contractors (the vast majority is not Highway works but utility companies) however this doesn't stop the utililities from undertaking roadworks within that 12 month period if there is an emergency i.e. gas leak, water leak etc. Why not write to the Council and ask for an explanation - you can then comment with some degree of knowledge.

Right, so the Town Hall gets a complete face-lift and now the immediate surrounding area gets a face-lift. What with HOUGHTON'S FOUNTAIN... Marvellous news, but let me point out that Shambles Street is currently living up to it's reputation as the filthiest street in Barnsley and this is the MAIN route to Barnsley centre. Where is the COMMON SENSE from this "poverty crying council"????

This is another Labourite Houghton folly..
This will be done for another photo call for our labour council ..(Remembrance Day )
As for more work starting in January , I will believe that when I see it.
An your all right,, this labour council are lacking in common sense and will carry on making huge financial mistakes , but come Election Day they will b voted in again ...

Correct Paul.

If only the populous of Barnsley woke up and realised that these Labour idiots have done absolutely NOTHING for this town.

I cant see it happening in my lifetime though.
