Calls To Abolish Town Council

Tuesday October 8 2013

A BRIERLEY town councillor says he will continue to push for the council to fold after its former clerk landed it with a debt of more than £1million and left the public to foot the bill.

Frank Hardy joined the town council two years ago and says he will continue with his manifesto following the conviction of Janet Cooper last week.

"From the start I have said Brierley Town Council should be abolished, it's not providing anything for the rate payers that Barnsley Council can't provide," he said.

Services have had to be cut as a result of Cooper's fiddling and 5,000 residents have faced increases in precept charges to help cover the costs.

Mr Hardy said Barnsley Council could not consider abolishing the council until Cooper's court case had been heard.

"It's totally unfair to expect parishioners to pay off this debt which is no fault of their own," he added.

Mr Hardy said a parish poll was held in 2002 when 91 per cent of people who voted said they wanted the town council to be abolished.

In 2010 Mr Hardy helped collect signatures for the abolition of the council with 1,459 people saying they no longer wanted it.

So Mr Hardy, who gets stuck with the debt?

Wonder if the debt would die with the council?. She should be well and truly ashamed of what she did and im glad she is in prison for quite a while.

Imagine my surprise. So in 2002 (11 years ago) 91% voted to abolish the council, it's now nearly 12 years later! Talk about drag it out. Clearly these people in charge cannot organise anything (apart from lining their own pockets). It's not the council that needs abolishing, it's the idiots that run it that need replacing.

Why stop there, abolish Barnsley MBC too, its too big and inefficient, bring back the old urban district councils and restore local democracy..

Janet Cooper should be released from prison and given her job back! Clearly she was the only person on Brierly Council who knew what was going on the rest of them were just happy to keep getting there wages and expenses. Speaks volumes about Local Governance.

There's some sense in your poist rainbow. Schools, doctors surgeries, hospitals(now sounding like airports, with gates instead of wards?) Banks,,the list goes on,are all too big. They are like cattle markets. Horrible.
