Hundreds Of Gateway Plaza Patients Fail To Find New GP

Tuesday December 13 2011

HUNDREDS of patients who used to be treated at Gateway Plaza have yet to register with a new GP, NHS Barnsley has revealed.

The GP practice - run by Nestor Primecare Services Limited - closed on November 30 but figures show that 340 patients have not yet registered with a new GP practice despite reminder texts, phone calls and three letters.

Dr Ken McDonald, medical director for NHS Barnsley, said: “Although the majority of patients are now registered with a new GP practice there are still some who haven’t yet and this is worrying. Having a GP in place over the cold winter period is important whether or not you have a long-term condition because it ensures you can access care quickly at a time when you’re more likely to need it.”

All residents across Barnsley are now being offered the chance to use a new online tool that allows patients to compare GPs.

Dr Ken McDonald added: “The new tool allows people to easily make an informed choice about their care at the click of a couple of buttons.”
