Owners Complain At Loss Of Business Thanks To Ongoing Roadworks

Friday September 6 2013

Fury from A61 businesses Fury from A61 businesses

A GARAGE owner says his business will not survive the ten weeks roadworks are expected to last on Wakefield Road.

Iain Hulme runs TCS Continental Spares garage on Wakefield Road.

He said closing one side of the road so it can be resurfaced is putting his and other businesses in jeopardy as it has resulted in a dip in passing trade.

A temporary one-way road restriction is in place from Burton Road to Smithies Lane to allow for resurfacing work and is only open to traffic heading away from Barnsley town centre. Inbound traffic is being diverted through Monk Bretton and Smithies.

Iain said: "We've just had our usual quiet period of six weeks because of the school holidays and I dare say the business will not last the ten weeks these roadworks will take.

"I had a customer who got to the top of Old Mil Lane to try and get to my garage and it took an hour. In my eyes that's not on."

Iain's isn't the only business suffering. Clive Harris, 59, owns Barnsley Van Hire and said all the traders on Wakefield Road are angry about the roadworks and the few days' notice they were given.

"Only half the road is working," he said. "The concern is trade is going to suffer. We've already endured two years of roadworks and disruption.

"People are ringing up asking how to get here and I'm having to try and direct them and some are cancelling their bookings."

A KFC employee said it has seen a dip as a lot of its custom is from traffic going towards the town centre.

Motorcycle shop owner Shane Parkin said traffic had been 'carnage' since Monday.

He said: "There are cars turning around in the middle of the road and with the way things are, nobody is going to want to go into town. It's mayhem."

Yer can bet the council will still want all rents and dues for 10 weeks. This is a disgrace and "heads must roll". Cllr MIller should resign without question and someone who can do the job be brought in immedaitely. This is damaging the area on a vast scale, but I notice Cllr Miller is quite happy to be driving around in his 4 x 4. What next Cllr MIller? Work halted due to an unknown tribe of Buffelo found near the Fleets? Perhaps an abandoned SPACE SHIP found near CARLTON HILL? RESIGN and RESIGN NOW...

Who is to resign Fred?

The work needs doing at some point and it can't happen over night, people have access to these establishments so what's the fuss all about? Get over it.

It took me an hour to get to asda from monk Bretton its backing all the way up to the crossing near Iceland! Why couldn't they have just done it in smaller stages its been going on long enough why not stretch it out some more.

I would just like to add that the above isnt wrong at all... we at eldon motorspares just down road did last week nearly the same as we could do in a day.. blocked at one end with no signs sbout buisness and that confusing at the other end no one dares to drive up...were on a island without boats... and what help is BMC...if you mess about with 3 years books we look at it... but ive been clearly told by a worker..that in 28 years of him been a planner he has never known a successful claim.... come down to wakefield road and tell me things are ok and companys arnt losing trade

Well, I'm not involved with this debate, but guesty, that has made me belly laugh.
The thought of some councillor dancing about, fingers in his ears and farting to the beat. All the while business are screaming for money for wages etc. Its like Rome's burning.
The image,s in my little nut now forever. Brilliant

Im glad it made someone chuckle, and apologies if it seems a bit insensitive to those with businesses in the area, I feel for you along that road and it really puzzles me how BMBC can do this to you.

Remember when the ballot boxes come out.

Dan Works can happen overnight... but it was never put forward as were any other ideas.. access is terrible as is flow of traffic... some workers from wakefield reckon the work would have been done in a week over there...

Dan quite clearly own his own company or need to access this area therefore doesnt see the big deal! This is local people who are potentially losing their lively hoods and income to feed their familys and pay their bills. anyone else i have spoken to who usually uses this road have had nothing but agro. I myself use this road daily and its causing me a great deal of inconvenience.this was an extreamly busy road. It does have to be done however work hasnt even started after a week. Ad i know that even most residents would rather them do 2/3 nights of night work (as they do on the motorway etc) and get it done in one go. When u own ur own business and have this happen to you, then u can comment DAN

Well said Nat. Its jobs and mortgages, not just roadworks.
It shouldn't be taken lightly.

Guesty it made me chuckle mate and the support shown by 99% of people including yours is fantastic .... shame the support of bmc is the same... updates on there site now show a 3 week closure that turned into ten weeks.. now been 13weeks

NOT one of the local businesses would disagree that the work needs to be done its the way its been organised, the letter to inform us was only delivered a few days beforehand and the road was closed for a whole week before work started today and come 5 oclock not a worker to be seen. if info is correct they have wakefield council workers helping who have been heard to say if this was wakefield theyd have it done in a week or so? The council said they were trying to help by doing some of the work on sundays? are they naïve enough to believe the businesses all close on a sunday??? The mega snarl ups of last week quite rightly aren't as bad now but that's only because no one in their right mind is coming anywhere near wakefield road we are all loosing business afterall why would anyone willingly make a 2 1/2 mile detour to come onto wakefield road if they can go elsewhere. Compensation??? your having a laugh they require 3years accounts and its common knowledge they don't uphold claims anyway as it says on the net compensation isn't usually successful as the road works are deemed as being for the good of everyone ....tell that to all the businesses landlords at the end of the month...no business no profit no rent money as if times aren't hard enough

I had the journey of all journeys yesterday travelling to and from the town centre. On approaching the work areas,I either saw no workmen, machinery at a stand still, and at one point I counted 12 workmen grouped together admiring the views.

council rules on road works is or used to be no contracters can start before 9 and must finish before 4 [busyiest times] as for wakefield rd i used to live down there 15 yr ago and i know to 2 ocasions that work was done at night as for roy miller hes got a yellow streak up his back spouts a lot but dont face it up like when he spouts on littering fines does plenty round schools how many did he give to all the travellers ? i think he ought to be the next council cut

I love reading the comments about Wakefield rd, but don't you get the feeling the so called ones who run the council don't give a dam about the people who work, live and own businesses ere. I put my concerns to the council nearly 3 weeks ago and our so Mr miller and Jarvis have not even bothered to contact me. it is about time labour got out they are a joke in Barnsley. it is about time we got in touch with the big papers and watch miller and Jarvis come out of hiding. waste of space and a disgrace you are.
