Council Makes Hundred Of Thousands From Parking Charges

Tuesday August 27 2013

BARNSLEY Council raked in £552,000 from car parking charges, new figures have revealed.

Figures released by the RAC for 2011/12 show councils are making hundreds of thousands of pounds profit from their off-street car parking operations.

Professor Stephen Glaister, of the RAC Foundation, said: "For many local authorities parking charges are a nice little earner, especially in the capital.

"The bottom line is that hundreds of millions of pounds are being contributed annually to council coffers through parking charges and the drivers who are paying then have a reasonable expectation to see the cash spent on improving the roads."

So where's it going? Many of the towns roads are in a terrible state. Come clean BMBC.. what are you doing with it ? Not landscaping car parks and building comb statues I hope !!!!

They didn't build the statue it's hired but this money needs to be reinvested in the roads

That's only just under £2100 per day, I would have thought it would have been nore than that.

I wouldn't say the money should be invested in the roads.

But rather in access to the town via the roads.

Such as park and ride schemes (whereby parking charges entitle you to free bus/train link to the town). New car parks etc. I'd personally like to see additional large multi-storey car parks on the outside of the town, with raised and partially grassed walkways, with flowerbeds and covered by cctv leading into the town over the ring road. Provide good access to the town for people in cars, but keep the cars out, and keep the air in town clean, and the main thoroughfares pedestrianised.

Where does the money go? CCTV to keep car park secure and try to prevent cars getting broken into; to employee the staff to empty the machines, fill the tickets etc; to employ the traffic wardens who patrol the car parks and streets of the town centre to prevent obstructions and nuisance parkers; to maintain the car parks.... need we go on?? Well done BMBC you are managing to keep parking prices down compared to most other towns, offer free parking on a Saturday encouraging visitors to the town centre & help to keep us safe

You know where all the money will go, same as all the rest to pay for all the work shy at the council, those solitaire licences don't come cheap you know, and someone has too keep Facebook filled with lots of amusing photos of animals in comedy poses, that £500k will keep 2 or 3 Council workings going for a couple of weeks.
