Barnsley Man Faces Being Kicked Out

Saturday August 24 2013

Protests outside court Protests outside court

A BARNSLEY man who was given 28 days to pay his 'bedroom tax' is facing being kicked out of his home.

Scott Dickinson, 22, was given the warning to pay something or else his home at Standhill Crescent, New Lodge, would be repossessed by the council.

He's £237.50 in arrears and District Judge Alastair Babbington suspended granting a possession order to allow Mr Dickinson to 'get benefits advice'.

But Mr Dickinson said after the brief hearing: "I would rather have been kicked out. I am sick of being messed about.

"I do not need advice. I only receive a certain amount of Jobseekers' Allowance and housing benefit. I am trying to settle rent and council tax arrears so I cannot pay bedroom tax.

"I will try and pay a bit off over the next 28 days but I am absolutely skint.

"I have looked for work but there are no jobs about. I am willing to work but there is nothing available."

He added that he had previously had jobs as a welder and in pubs and restaurants.

Mr Dickinson was one of seven cases heard. Out of those three were given a suspended possession order, meaning the tenants must follow an agreement to pay their rent and any arrears. They also have court costs to pay.

Two cases were adjourned and two tenants had already cleared their arrears before the court hearing - but had to repay all court costs.

Berneslai Homes said eviction is a last resort but a spokesman added: "However, where tenants don't engage with us or act on the support and advice we offer then we have no option but to ask for a court order to enforce payment of rent or as a last resort to evict."

Asos are setting on,so your not looking very hard. AHR where's the evidence of mass immigration you speak of, unless they are coming to work at Asos because they can't get the staff due to the high rate of idle sods sponging a living off the country. More work in a junior asprin.

Don't BIG UP that trash company asos . Its a disgusting place to work . Poor pay , workers badly treated . And these knobs get grants per worker to take you on .BAD employer in my opinion !!!!!!!!!!!!

Asos only set eastern Europeans on via agencies and has one of the highest turnovers of staff in western Europe.
AHR speaks of the million or so Bulgarians and Romanians that will land on our shores next year, or are you yet another person who sticks their head in the sand believing that there isn't an immigration problem in our country?

I can understand what Scott is saying but there is jobs out there for young lads like yourself mate, May not be the most glamorous job in the world but it will pay ya rent and council tax and keep the Balliffs from your door.

If he refuses to pay then he will get evicted and will never get the chance to get social housing in the future. So he either learns to budget like everyone else or he had better get his sleeping bag ready. Does he not know that private rent is even more expensive?

This bedroom tax was brought in to subsidise the millionaires tax cut as the lucky ones earning over £150,000 a year obviously need the extra cash. It has been estimated that each millionaire will be £44,000 a year better off. What a wicked man Cameron is.

My school and college grades are not the best and i may not be the smartest sometimes but i worked BLOODY HARD to get where i am. I have never claimed a penny in benefits and dont plan to. I pride myself in the fact i pay my own way and always will. The jobs are there you just dont want them!! My husband literally started by shovelling shit for a living!!

@ the narrow minded individual(s) that's pretending to be Muslims you are idiots all that is trying to do is cause recial hatred. I'm a workin man and I have been since 15 years of age and I believe the bedroom tax is just to line the governments pockets but as for saying there's no jobs I can secure him a interview for Asos within 2 mins. My mum is disabled she doesn't have great income but she pays her bedroom tax and manges to live and she doesn't get a lot compared wat others get and there always trying to throw her off despite the fact she can't walk 30 yards without a walking stick. So a 22 year old lad shouldn't have a problem getting a job

Cut back on other things we all are tightening our belts and a 20 something healthy male should be ashamed to be in this position not all over the press moaning

Get a grip, get a job, get a life and stop moaning that the free stuff you get ain't good enough

Reply Posted by becki on Monday August 26 2013 at 12:08
Why is everyone calling it a tax? It's a cut in housing benefit not a tax. If you don't need the bedroom why should you get extra benefit? There's people working all hours to provide for their family and have to live in overcrowded conditions because they can't afford the extra rent for a bigger house.

I'm on £40k a year and I live in a house I can afford to pay for. If your on benefits and can't pay your rent move out and let someone live in it who can pay instead of me a taxpayer subsidising you.

Reply Posted by Tom on Monday August 26 2013 at 15:04
In many parts of Barnsley social rents now exceed private rents. The government continues to raise rents, yet the rents have paid for the houses many times over. There is no subsidy. If you want to talk subsidies, you want to be talking about Help To Buy that pushes up house prices, housing benefit that pushes up rents, planning restrictions that create artificial scarcity and in turn increase prices etc.

The government would gladly offer you a subsidy to buy a £600k house. Ironically your wages would be too low to buy a £600k house even with the subsidy, yet you earn double the Barnsley average wage, and about 66% higher than the national average wage. Why we are subsidising people to buy houses that are so expensive is what we should be worrying about...

It' a subsidy for the wealthiest property owners and the banks

To think a person on the average wage used to be able to buy a nice house, now they cannot. Christ, many workers on the average wage need to claim housing benefit to merely rent a property.

Bedroom susbidy, council house subsidy? Nah, not really, the government is subsidising property prices, land prices and our feckless banks balance sheets.

RICS puts the building cost of a new build at £30k. We could be building houses to rent to the public on public land for £30 a week, turn a profit and attract plenty of private investment to fund the building by paying investors a 5% ROIC.

A new record for the amount of people on housing benefit has just been set. Since May 2010, an extra 320 738 are on housing benefit, records released 2 weeks ago show. There are now 5,072,264 on housing benefit.
The rise in the amount of working people claiming benefit since May 2010 was 337,059. A million people in work now need housing benefit.

If you look at the figures you will see that the rise in working people claiming housing benefit is greater than the actual rise in people claiming housing benefit since the coalition came to power. Far from reducing the housing benefit bill, the coalition has increased the housing benefit bill massively. It will continue to rise as inflation busting government mandated rent rises kick in for so called social tenants each year. Both council and housing association rents are forced to rise above inflation.

Some are rising far above inflation as new rent setting formulas are being trialled - in parts of London, weekly rents for council properties exceed weekly wages for full time workers. These workers need to claim housing benefit, hundreds of pounds per week in housing benefit.

The housing benefit bill looks set to rise by £5billion in just 5 years, rather than fall £2billion. The ill thought out bedroom tax was designed to save a paltry 0.15 billion. Instead it looks set to increase the benefit bill by 0.5 billion, before taking account the cost of providing emergency accommodation to the people it makes homeless. And up here we will be left with empty properties and growing lists of homeless people.

For some reason our government thinks it makes sense to pay £300 a week for somebody to live in a hostel, rather than £80 for them to have an extra bedroom that isn't really in demand. Pretty soon they will be paying £80 for a single bedroom anyhow.
Far better to knock down houses, and make the population live in tiny bedsits, much more profitable for the landlord class in parliament anyhow.

And instead of better housing for workers, we see many working people cry out, make fellow workers on benefit live in poor quality housing, because I do. (Why don't they want better housing for everyone, especially themselves?)

And I bet you they claim their tax credits. Ironically workers now claim 6 times more in benefits that the unemployed. We spend £30+Bn a year on tax credits, yet just £5Bn on JSA.

Hows about cheaper housing and a decent house for everyone for crying out loud?

Just because the front page of the daily express says rising house prices are good 6 times a week does not make it so, let us not forget the owner of that paper has a massive multi million property portfolio.

If a farmer told you rising food prices were good, would you jump up in a joy at your inability to feed yourself, I think not!

Rising gas prices whoopee! Pensioners can feeeze to death, we will all be rich.
Rising house prices and rents, whoopee we can all be homeless.
Rising food prices, hurrah, we can all starve!
Rising transport costs, hurray we can walk to work eventually, we will only have to spend twice as long commuting!

Im not too good with words but here goes, we are a family of 4, my partner had a illness so was forced out of a pretty good job. Lived on benifits for a while wich no I dont condone as a full time thing, we fell behind with the "bedroom tax" only 30pound though but we had a call saying they were going to take possession over the house but this is because my partner decided enough was enough & go get a job wich he has found but because he was activly looking & stopped his esa for jsa we didnt have 2 penny's to rub together! Luckily we can pay the arrears, but how can you get into arrears so bad as the guy in the article, my opinion is get off your bum & get a job benifits are there for people who really need the help! & on a part time basis! But all my life I have paid my own way...what is wrong with people today!

You need a reality check too keep them legs closed and get a job!!!!!! People shouldn't be allowed that many kids unless they can provide for them it's ridiculous. Next time use a rubber.

Lad at work recently been made redundant, when asking his advisor at the Job Centre about the jobs @ Atos he was told not to bother.
If a Job Centre advisor is telling him not to bother then this speaks volumes about what sort of company Asos really is doesn't it?
After all is said and done the advisor is there to help people back into work, any work!

Asos - One of the highest turnovers of staff in western Europe!

Our company have set on 30 - 40 people on over the last 12 months with 95% of them coming from Asos.
By those figures alone one suggests that there serious problems at Asos don't you think?

Not everyone on the job seekers allowance are scroungers. I'm nearly 2O i've been out of college a couple of years now and I cant get a job. Id love to have a job but unless you have a qualification or experience no-one wants you. I may not have been on jsa long, but its crap. if I could find a job tomorrow I would take it. Most companies would rather take foreigners because they do not have to pay them the same amount as they do for their own people. this government is pathetic and until someone proper gets in this country going to go downhill more and more.

Reply Posted by Mary on Wednesday August 28 2013 at 15:11
Leanne, you should go back to college or wherever and retrain to get relevant skills instead of sitting on benefits. Plus do not believe all the racist crap as that sort of stuff is what is bringing young people of Barnsley down. At 20 you know nothing about politics so please do not comment.

Reply Posted by sid on Wednesday August 28 2013 at 15:20
Mary, Leanne may be young and not know much about politics, but you have no right to tell her not to comment.
Thats wrong and you were rude to her too.
Also, when did you last look for a job? Maybe she has more knowledge on that matter that you.

Reply Posted by Mary on Thursday August 29 2013 at 17:20
Sid I may have been rude in stating that Leanne has no knowledge of politics but will I be wrong? No of course not. She is out of order for talking racist rubbish that has been foisted on her by her parents generation. It is no wonder talking as she does that she has no employment. I am 43 and been a stay at home mum for 6 years with no benefits ever. I applied for 4 jobs last month and got the fourth and start back at work next week. So yes I do know what I am talking about thanks Sid. Do you? BTW I have worked since 18 full time until deciding to raise my children. Now they are back at school I am back at work. Never had tax credits and never signed on. My husband and I got married before planning to have children and paying for them ourselves. All the family allowance goes into their savings for university fees in the future. There are jobs available but most of the people on here can barely read or write and cannot spell. They have attitude problems and are undereducated. That is the main reason so many are unemployed. No doubt people will knock me for my comments but then small minded people are often clever and condescending but rarely successful.

Reply Posted by sid on Thursday August 29 2013 at 17:46
Strange all of your comments. You need a sweeping brush. I'm almost 60 actually, had two kids an worked ALL OF MY LIFE,never claimed benefits including sickness, just maternity. I have run my own business for the last 30 yes,and do employ young people, who by the way are all on more than the minimum wage. I would never tell a young person that they talk rubbish,as I have found during the past, found that a lot of adults do just that. All I,m saying is,we should work with the young, not bang them on their head with a no confidence stick. Also, its not your site,so if any youngster wants to comment on here, they have as much right as you. You don't need to big yourself up about not claiming benefits either, there are some of us,me included, that pays massive amounts into the pot,not just PAYE. The youth of today do have a voice and you should do well to remember they are the voices that will be heard loudest in the years to come. You are I,m afraid agiest, just because they, and many others don't hold the same rude opinions as you.

Reply Posted by sid on Thursday August 29 2013 at 18:01
By the way Mary, why did you feel the need to brag about your life? As you can see,I have done more with mine, nurturing young lads and lasses by employing them. There are plenty more out their that have done better than me as well, but I don't feel the need to belittle a young girl with an opinion, and then be arrogant enough to say I have more right to state my opinion just because if not claimed benefits. Yes,be proud Mary, but don't bash the youngsters. In fact Leanne has shown herself to have a far more mature than you Mary. Sorry, but its true. She can post on here when she likes and about what she likes.....get over it. If you don't like it,why don't YOU get off?

Not been funny but where are all these jobs that everyone's talking about? Because unless you've got experience and a car to get there sorry but the only option is the dole at min for young people! I have a job and I am 18 years old I have been struggling to find work since I left school.. I do 1.5 hours a day luckily I don't have any children to pay for buy I'm trying to save up for my own house but can't exactly do that when there is no jobs about to pay for them! It's alright you people mouthing about this bloke been on dole n won't get a job but maybe he tries for you that can jump from job to job good for you! But it not what you know it's who you know and Asos.. Load of shit you can get a job there my bf applied and because he's been unemployed for a certain amount of months they won't accept him the reason your friend or whoever got the job is probs cos they lied about how long they've been unemployed.. Think about it :/ yeah fair enuf there is some propa lazy basts about that just claim dole and do **** all but like my bf he claims it he went on work experience twice unpaid and got his dole money stopped because he did work experience that he found himself! and had no money for months and still hasn't. With the prices of insurance for cars for young people we can't get them because most kids get there mummy's and daddy's to pay for everything. When your on dole you can't do **** all when you've got kids you get more benefits to live of my bloke lives off 113 pound every 2 weeks. Getting a job in barnsley without experience is like winning the lottery these days.. My rent on house goes up every year and there's only 3 of us who live in the house and were having to save so hard to just pay the rent almost 500-600 pound a month and going up to 1100 a month.. But we can't move as there's no houses we can afford because otherwise we have to think about busses and with the prices of them going up to its stupid. Just leave the poor bloke alone if you work or not its tough times for everyone why dont people tell them idiots who get 500pound a month to get a job instead?!

Laura - what kind of house are you renting where the rent is going to go up to £1100 per month??

Perhaps you should have paid more attention when you were at school. Education opens many doors

Lynsey and co, if your grammer and spelling on your job application forms is half as bad as it is in your posts, maybe that could be a key driver in the reason why you can't get a job.

Reply Posted by Leanne on Tuesday August 27 2013 at 19:46
Lynsey you are so right! immigrants come into this country and take jobs from us, that's why most young people cannot get jobs when they leave college.. and as for Steve, just because someone's grammar isn't to your satisfaction does not mean you have to call them on it.. for all you know they may have problems with spelling? don't put other people down for some silly reason like that.

Sometimes i think you write decent stuff
and then you spoil it by talking cock.
Asos employ people through agency if you dont keep up good work.
Try to skive or not keep to standards . you get the push.
When you work hard and do the job they set you on full time on there books.
Its called seperating the wheat from the chaff.
The post office have done the same thing for years .
When they need people at busy times they use agency workers or students when the busy time is done .they go.
Now stop being a know it buggerall and get your head out of your ass

Winky / Les / Mae ?

Firstly what is a know it buggerall?

There is absolutely no need for Asos to employ people via agencies, they could do exactly what most other employers "used" to do, hire a person, give them a three month trial and if they are good enough keep them on.

They only use agencies to do their dirty work, they also employ a large percentage of Foreign workers mostly Eastern Europeans to ensure they get their "bonus" of £1000+ per each foreign worker employed.

That's all it boils down to MONEY!

That woman earlier who gets 265 per week for her and her 6 kids. are you for real that doesnt include your 70:00 + per week rent and your average 15:00 per week council tax paid for you ......
Think about it .
Sex twice a day for a month. 4pound
state benefit. for a month. 1400 :00
Why do you think people get pissed off

A guy Im matey with trains people up for warehousing etc. 3 weeks ago,he worked overtime,he trained up 60 polish people sent in by an agency.
Something has gone so so wrong and someone in government should sort it out. What a mess it all is.

Mary, yes I maybe 2O and for your information I am going back into education but not at college as they will not take me. To be quiet honest I maybe young and apparently not known anything about politics but quiet frankly this government is a waste off space! since they got in theres been cuts here and there and everywhere! no-one can afford to barely live in this economy, so yeah I do know some things don't treat me like a little child! I am an adult. And as for don't comment, freedom of speech? or don't we get that anymore hm? Thankyou sid :) that's very nice of you

When you are back in education Leanne, you may eventually gain sufficient knowledge to understand why the current government are having to make economies in their spending.

I ask why is everyone at each others throats? Some of the comments are intimidating and disrespectful. People should do their own research before they spout and curse. All Councils, Police, Courts, Banks and even our country namely UK are listed as registered businesses (look for yourself). Many of these businesses have CCJ's set against them (documented in black and white). Businesses exist to make profit. Profit is extorted from the public unlawfully. Taxes are unlawful and always have been through the history of time. Taxes are just a concoction of lies keeping the rich richer and the poor poorer. If you believe taxes go back into the economy then you are subject to a brainwashing. How many people here know the difference between unlawful and illegal ? Until you know these differences only then will you realise what taxing is all about. Thumbs up to you Scott Dickinson and the best of luck to you! We need more people like you to be brave enough to stand up against unlawful tactics.

King eric, this government is nothing for the people. They do nothing, there taking disability benefits from people who need them! they need to sort it out. When I go back to education? even after ive been I doubt ill get a job because there is none anymore. Years and years ago you could walk into a job get fired then walk into another next day. If you don't know someone in a business or have the correct experience you get know where! and as for the government they need to book their idea's up.

Leanne, please see my comments above.

''king'' Eric, you have stated one comment to do with my education. If it was not for an adult learning place I would not be able to further my education. So yes the government is crap and need to leave this country alone otherwise it's going to go down hill. its pathetic! The government have made it so that young people cannot get a college place only the lucky few. The government are for the rich not the middle/lower class people without a lot of money which is wrong.

we should all have jobs. we shouldnt have to be evicted for anything. we should have jobs that not only pay for our utilities, and rent or mortgage. we should all have well paid jobs. whereby we can all afford a car. and good holidays. bcos for gods sake the people who are in work are expected to work 12 hours or more a day. we need quality time people. we shouldnt have to work to live. we should live to work.

firstly please stop being so rude to leanne king eric there really is no need.and secondly you are so right h its no wonder that this government are treating us like idiots, thats exactly how some people are behaving, if people dont see that this is exactly what they want us to do then you are playing straight into their hands, stop listening to their crap and get a mind of your own
