The Town's Broadband Speed - A WAB Debate

Tuesday August 20 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

RESEARCH has shown that Dodworth is in the top 50 slowest places in the UK for broadband speed. What do you think to your area's speed? Have your say on our WAB Debate.

The 2013 UK Rural Broadband Survey combines a short questionnaire about quality of service received with an automatic speed test, to build up a picture of the service experienced by internet users in different areas across the UK. You can take part in that by clicking here.

A few months ago, work was carried out by BT in Penistone to improve the area's connectivity speeds and Goldthorpe is also due to be upgraded by the end of spring 2014, but other parts of the region are woefully slow.

Tom Keeney, BT's regional director, said: "Research suggests that within 15 years, fibre broadband could bolster the economy of a typical town by £143million and create 225 new jobs, 140 new businesses and 1,000 more homeworkers."

So what's it like in your area? Tell us where you're from and if you're happy with your broadband speed on our WAB Debate.

I get around 50-60 mbps in Birdwell with BT infinity, before they rolled it out I got 0.8mbps.

i live in Dodworth and i can confirm this is right, both download and upload speeds in the area is shocking, for doing everyday things like browsing the internet its 'ok' but gong online on the Xbox and downloading and uploading it is poor, we have tried changing internet providers several times but this has proven to not make any difference, it is at its worst when the weather is bad and there has been times when we have been without a connection for a good day or so, i believe this is down to old telephones wiring underground, maybe its time BT did something about this?

"maybe its time BT did something about this? "

Don't be silly Glen, They have just gambled a BILLION pounds on BT Sport which in turn will provide them with £600 million a year in subscription fees alone.
A slightly better return than charging the populous of Dodworth £14.99 a month for Fibre Optic broadband don't ya think?

I live in the heart of Dodworth, just off high street, am on Bt infinity and get connection test of nearly 100mb down 25 up. DRL is also available which could match this. BT massively invested in Barnsley to prevent people moving to DRL.. FYI the green box outside budgens is fibre ready.

I live In ingbirchworth and I currently get 0.4mbs which is below the GUARNTREED* speed according to BT. It is impossible to load things such as a webpage such as apple.co.uk, you have no chance, it is impractical and unuseful and we have no option but to stick with it, 3G is even faster than our home network. It's ridiculous. They need to do something about it, it is actually outrageous.
