Businesswoman Welcomes Proposals For Motorists To Park

A BUSINESSWOMAN has welcomed government proposals to allow motorists to park on double-yellow lines for 15 minutes.

Rita Britton, owner of Pollyanna on Market Hill, said allowing motorists to park on yellow lines would be 'fantastic' and would help boost high streets.

Some of the problems encountered by Rita and her staff have included the delivery of stock, collection of takeaways and disabled people not having enough time to get in and out of cars.

"Anything that makes running a business that much easier all helps," she said. "That 15 minutes would allow someone to come in to collect their food or help their disabled mother out of the car without being threatened with a parking ticket and I think that's a good thing."

She said a delivery man received a parking ticket when dropping off deliveries to Pollyanna and Blah Bar.

She said although there were 4,000 parking spaces in Barnsley, none were close to Market Hill and 'a bit off leeway' was needed.

"The government need to look at things with a bit of common sense, and I'm sure it would be easier for traffic wardens," Rita added.

What do you think? Is it a good idea? Have your say below.

Of course it's a good idea. Commonsense prevails.

Common Sense in Barnsley Centre is known as a SUPER POWER... About time they had a flow of traffic going through Barnsley. Since we made by-passes, the town has destroyed itself from the inner... More parking = more revenue!

Excellent idea. Handy if you want to call in bank or pick up something

Idiotic the lines are there for a reason.

The use of loading bays for 15mins is a much better idea

Disabled badge holders can park in double yellow lines if its safe

Lazy people can walk a bit perhaps it will help the obesity epidemic if people got off their bums and walked

A recipie for congestion, accidents and angry road rage. It won't work. Loading Bays are what are needed

Short term parking provision is a great idea I think, but changing the meaning of double yellows seems like it might cause problems.

What if it's really not OK to park somewhere, for safety, or because it causes too much congestion? What kind of road markings will we get in those places?

I this I it's an appalling idea. There will be no way to police the parking and it will only promote more traffic in the centre and potentially cause accidents with pedestrians walking in between cars and also can cause accidents with cars. I'm really against this. The cons would really out way the pros

This woman is only interestd in her own business not any other. If people can afford to shop at Pollyanna Im sure they can afford a ticket in a car park

Can you imagine it, just parking where you want, when it comes to 'just nipping in to the bank' most selfish drivers won't care who they inconvenience, block entrances, etc. And by the way disabled drivers are NOT allowed to park on double yellows, and traffic wardens should ticket them.
