Barnsley Nurse Struck Off

A BARNSLEY Hospital nurse who deprived an elderly patient of one-on-one care and then went on to lie at his inquest has been struck off.

Patricia Fawcett ordered a junior nurse to help her around the ward when he should have been intensively monitoring the frail 74-year-old at Barnsley Hospital.

Fawcett then failed to co-operate with bosses during the investigation into the patient's death.

At his inquest, the nurse was said to have given 'brief and often one-word answers or shrugged her shoulders' and changed her story midway through.

The patient died on April 27, 2008, after a series of falls.

NMC panel chairman Edward Lucas said: "The panel considered that her lack of genuine remorse or regret, the absence of full insight, the sustained dishonesty and the fact that this involved her nursing practice were all further aggravating features of her misconduct.

"The panel formed the view that there was evidence of attitudinal problems on Ms Fawcett's part.

"It considered that Ms Fawcett breached the honesty and trustworthiness which are the bedrock of the nursing profession."

Fawcett's colleague, staff nurse Julie Norton, had also provided incomplete information to the internal investigation and was unable to tell a colleague who was in charge on the night shift.

But she was cleared of dishonesty and of failing to report the concerns of a junior colleague about the care of the patient.

No sanction was imposed.

Absolute scum bag.
people who care for others should have some sort of personality test while being strapped to a lie detector. that way you can weed out the rubbish.

I am a nurse, and I agree that what this nurse did was disgusting and immoral, but calling her an "it" and "scum" just lowers yourself to her level. And as for her "getting a big payout" don't be so ridiculas! That just won't happen. People are too quickly to jump on bandwagon with the majority of their comments being ignorant and uneducated!

Oh and Corrie, suggesting to "stone it" makes you just as bad, two wrongs do NOT make a right! You're just making yourself look ignorant!

I don't know why I put my name as Corrie on the previous post! I meant to put Claire, I obviously had Cories ludicrous comment on my mind more than I thought!

you get to 60, and nobody gives a damn, there are loads of aging people in hospital, that are just left on their own, i know it can never happen due to privacy legeslations, but would'nt it be an eye opener if some wards had hidden camera's, they find ways to cover up, and thats why these incidents seem far and few between !!!!............. good on the family for taking it further, this person should never be allowed to nurse again............. disgusts me !!!
