AN alcoholic has escaped a prison term after stealing from his local shop.

Paul Rushforth, 47, stole crates of lager from a branch of Rhythm 'n' Booze twice, Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told.

Rushforth, who was given a 32-week prison sentence, suspended for a year, was known by name at the shop, said Gus Kennedy, defending.

Mr Kennedy said Rushforth, who confirmed to the court he suffered from alcoholism, had cut down his drinking.

Mr Kennedy said: "He drinks in the day and later craves for more. The offences involved him walking into the shop where he has been known to staff for years.

"He has reduced his drinking and there have been days when he drinks nothing.

"He is willing and able to co-operate with the authorities. If he was sent straight to jail, he would come out with no support and his problem would reassert itself.

"He should be given a chance. If he takes that chance, we are all winners. If he does not, he knows the consequences."

Chantel Lowery-Green, prosecuting, said Rushforth had no money when he committed the thefts which he admitted.

Rushforth was ordered to undergo six months of alcohol treatment and District Judge John Foster said the treatment might lead to him living longer.

Rushforth, of Somerset Street, Cudworth, was ordered to pay an £80 victim surcharge, compensation of £43 and £40 in costs.
