Dummy Soldier To Be Carried In Soldier's Memory

Wednesday August 7 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A DUMMY soldier on a stretcher will be carried in memory of a military policeman shot dead in Iraq a decade ago.

Lance Corporal Ben Hyde, 23, was killed by an Iraqi mob in the village of Al Majar Al Kabir, along with five colleagues in June 2003.

His parents John and Sandra, from Northallerton, set up a memorial trust in their son's name in 2005 and have completed a series of charity challenges carrying dummy 'George' in aid of the Royal Military Police Central Benevolent Fund.

Their latest quest, a 214-mile coast-to-coast trek along the Trans Pennine Trail, started on Saturday and the walk will pass between Penistone and Silkstone on August 10.

Dad John said the feat will be completed by a small team.

"We will be accepting donations on our route and our success depends very much on the support we receive."
