Barnsley Library will be loaning out more than just books tomorrow - it will be loaning people.

The Human Library event, which runs from 11am to 2pm on Friday, will allow people to be 'borrowed' for up to ten minutes at a time.

The Human Library concept originated in Denmark and the one in Barnsley has been arranged to raise awareness of disabilities - the people who will be on loan will be able to answer questions about disability at home and in the workplace.

A spokesman said: "The aims of the Barnsley event are to break down barriers and address prejudice and stigma associated with disabled people. It also hopes to raise awareness of the problems facing disabled people in our society."

Many thanks to the Mayor and Consort who opened the event and took an active interest by borrowing a few human books. It's a pity no-one else from Barnsly's economic & political class found the time to come and do so. I was borrowed twice and felt it useful to pass on details of my disability and how I cope with working full-time.
