Goldthorpe Businesswoman Scared For Stock If Plans Go Ahead

Wednesday July 24 2013

GOLDTHORPE businesswoman Cheryl Rose says that she is scared her stock would be stolen if she was to remove metal shutters from her shop front.

Barnsley Council has approached shop owners on Barnsley Road with a view to them removing the rolling metal shutters they use to protect their shops in the evening to improve the look of the high street and to encourage more window shopping.

Officers claim this would go hand-in-hand with the regeneration of the area but Cheryl, who runs 'Posh Frocks', a dress shop that provides customers with bespoke dresses, believes the idea is ridiculous due to the temptation it would provide.

"Nobody would consider taking their shutters down around here. I've got thousands of pounds worth of dresses and I think they would all be gone after the first night," she said.

"I don't want to have a go at Goldthorpe because I have never been broken into here but we have not got a manned police station nearby so alarms would not help either. It would just be a smash and grab and everything would be gone."

The argument that sales would be boosted by window shopping when shut was also rubbished by Cheryl: "Nobody walks these streets during closed hours."

Cllr Ralph Sixsmith cites the Arcade in Barnsley as another area that gives off a bad vibe at night time. He described it as "a steel tunnel".

The council would also look to foot some of the bill if internal shutters were installed in the shops on the stretch of Barnsley Road which is just up from where the town's main redevelopment is taking place.

"We could put internal ones in, I know there's a cost behind it but we did propose to offset some of it through different entities," he said.

"That image is one we're trying to get rid of as well as the approach to the town."

There is nothing to suggest crime figures are down in the area, say the police, and they would only support a regeneration of shutters.

Perhaps the council ought to sort themselves out first, how long have we had unsightly metal barriers all along the roadworks by Wickes and around the concrete garden at the Town Hall. They are fools and ought to look at what will happen to the shops insurance premiums if the shutters are removed; and if/when the property is broken into will they cover the increased premiums then?
Why don't they improve the look of the buildings where Jade Palace is/derelict properties on Sheffield Road/Shabby shops at bottom of Dodworth Road by town end roundabout/weeds along sides of road all throughout the borough/potholes on every single road - then start telling others what to do. BMBC needs to commit and invest in the area first and offer incentives for businesses to do the same by reducing rents/rates for small independents.

WAB - Barnsley Council was looking at introducing a forum where they wanted local businesses/business people to get involved in improving the district - what has happened with this/how do people get involved?

Of course it would improve window shopping - for every thieving buggar in Goldthorpe!!! What may improve business is actually having the shops open - I can never understand why there is still a half day closing on a wednesday for 99% of shops in Goldthorpe. Going slightly off point....."unmanned police station".....in Goldthorpe??? This maybe the reason that so many crimes take place in this village. There is a perfectly good building for the police to use - so how about using it?

i live down the road in Highgate and go up the street only if i have to I take it this councillor bloke is counting the new pavement that the druggies love as refurbishment of the town centre. If the shops have to have shutters which they do why not make them uniformed so theyre all they same neat and tidy. That might attract some more decent businesses as the street wont look so scary as for the police station they did feck all when it was open so thats neither here nor there. The whole of the top end of Doncaster road needs knocking down and starting again.

I live and work in Goldthorpe and it is sad to see how it has gone down over the years. At one point we had every kind of shop you could think of you could buy everything all we have now is hairdressers and takeaways. Why the council wasted so much money on new pavements which are still covered in dog crap, rubbish and chewing gum I will never no. Ok there refurbishing the shopping area but what about all the side streets of terrace house that are empty and boarded up. The place is a mess and has been left to rot since the miners strike. And who goes window shopping in Goldthorpe? Shutters are essential these days. Find a copper. Well next time your in Goldthorpe have a look see if you can see one.

The credit union got robbed at 11:00am in broad daylight while people were in collecting there benefits do ya think throwing a brick through a window at night to get a freebie will not cross someone's mind.
The shutters are up for a reason.

Firstly the traders in Goldthorpe are lazy. They hardley ever bother to stay open past 3 in the afternoon and close often during the week plus half day Wednesday is rubbish. No wonder none can make money. The only shops open early doors are the bakers.
Many of the shops look run down and sell cheap crap such as balloons and knock kids second hand stuff. Too many takeaways thanks to the council and rubbish hairdressers that are full of people who cannot cut hair.
The Police station was often used by Police officers in the past but now it is full of idle useless PCSOs who do not know what to do. except stand around eating pasties whilst having no idea how to be smart and fit.
The shopping area is ugly thanks to the new pavement and there are not enough bins and the locals never use them anyway. the pub should be shut down or at the least the beer garden moved from the front as it is always full of scrubbers.
There are some decent shops ie opticians, pharmacists, bakers and lthe library is good but the rest is a dump.
Do not get me started about the eejits who drop their kids off at the school near the nick. Lowest of the low.

How can you call people the lowest of the low????
I think the lowest of the low would be the ones who do not take their kids to school.

I have been area manager for a shop in Goldthorpe for ten years. In our first shop we were broken into on a regular basis as we didn't have shutters, and I wouldn't like to think how many times that shop was re-glazed. We moved more central around five years ago to a shop with shutters front and back and a steel door at the back, and since then - no break ins or attempts, although if we leave the bins out they get fired! As for opening times, our shop opens Mon -Sat 9.00 - 4.30, and we never close half day. We also always have beautifully presented windows and interior!

Why not get the shutters that have hatchings rather than the solid metal fronts - stock will then at least be visible & secure.

Maybe if the locals used the shops in Goldthorpe more they would be in a position to stay open longer but why sit there in the hope that maybe one person is going to go in and spend a tenner they have to pay overheads gas electic rates and rent it isnt free. Our high street is our problem for using the big supermarkets..what happened to loyalty , dont preach unless you support your high street

I don't know Goldthorpe but it sounds to me like the best part of it is the road out!! Shame really when so many communities are being swallowed up by do gooders - the council!! Get off your arses and do something about it not suggest taking shutters down. Talk to the Business people first before spending god knows how much coming up with idiotic ideas

Please don't Rubbish the people of Goldthorp.I've been trading there for 4 Years now,and have never had any trouble. I keep my premises presentable, and always have a smart window display . There are some lovely shops in Goldthorpe, perhaps some of you should come and see for yourselves. However I stand by my original comments as far as needing shutters at night is concerned, and this is only due to the minority who would see it as an opportunity.Perhaps see-through shutters, externaly mounted of a uniform design are an opption.
