Christkindlmarkt Returns To Barnsley - With A Local Twist

Wednesday November 23 2011

THE POPULAR Christkindlmarkt is returning to Barnsley on Wednesday with over 50 stalls coming in to the town centre - but this year, it will have a local twist.

The event has been extended to run five days until November 27 when traders from Barnsley's twin town of
Schwäbisch Gmünd will be coming to Barnsley with a performance from the Frumptarn Guggen Band, a wine tent and food.

But this year - local craft and fashion businesses have also stepped in to show their support. On Thursday until Sunday, they will join the traders in a special marquee opposite Topshop showing their wares to their hometown.

Stalls include local woman Jill Govier, a former teacher who has launched her 'Touchy Feely Textiles' business making bags out of old suit jackets; Elsecar woman Jenny Hallam with her handcrafted jewellery; Hoyland women Jilly Gough and Emily Sharpe who will be bringing in leather handbags and women's fashion; a new Barnsley company called Mr Monocle who design their own tee-shirts as well as Cupcake Cottage, Sally's Posh Knits and Louisa Kemp Ceramics.

The 'Handmade In Barnsley' event will run until the Sunday and will have a special visit from Barnsley MP Dan Jarvis, the shadow arts minister.
