Knighthood Is Recognition For Town, Says Councillor

Wednesday July 3 2013

THE leader of Barnsley Council says he hopes more Barnsley folk will be nominated for awards after his knighthood.

Sir Steve Houghton, leader of Barnsley Council since 1996, said he was privileged and proud to be awarded a knighthood for parliamentary and political services in the Queen's birthday honours list.

"For me it's as much recognition of all we're doing in Barnsley as it is anything I have achieved and it's fantastic for the town," said Cllr Houghton.

"The fact is there are a lot of people in Barnsley doing wonderful things and they don't get the recognition they deserve - usually because other people simply do not know.

"It would be nice if the publicity about my knighthood could also act as an impetus to encourage more people to nominate others.

"The town already has the Proud of Barnsley awards which are hopefully going to expand.

"I would like to see more people nominate their neighbours, colleagues, family and friends for national awards because I genuinely believe there are some very very special people in this borough."

Steve Houghton is NOT an ambassador for this town, he is a symbol of everything that is wrong within local government. A labour flunky that resides over tory cuts all the while protecting his fellow troughers at the top, they get the councillor roles to avoid accountability and reward themselves for failiure.
Barnsley Council is an oldb
The senior management at BMBC is guilty of maladministration, and if did any digging Im sure there would be some interesting figures that coulc be revealed.
He and his cronies have awarded themselves 100% payrises in less than 10 years, increased their pensions by an extraordninary amount anD then have the cheek to claim up to 35k per year in expenses! 35k per year on expenses what is he eating for lunch? normal people on lower wages have to provide their own but no not sir big steve with his services to parliament.

He has been in the top job since 1996 - the labour boom years, unfortunately they didn't make it to Barnsley he won't stand up to the tories barr a few token statements. The amount of waste by BMBC is diabolical yet the people in the top jobs keep them despite their evident failiures. I'm only going to mention a few but I could probably go all day

The tuscan hill village joke.
The halo project.
The wall.
Building a 5 Million pound sports centre on The old Kingstone site using lottery money and then knocking it down less than 5 years later. The site now sits as a rubble heap
The Barnsley Markets project - which he will not admit is a none starter due to the fact there is no money.
The town centre regenreation which is well overdue.
The failing secondary schools and choosing to build new ones on dual carriage ways and not owning them.
The A61 wakefield road sham which is now 18 months late - and has involved BMBC building wickes a free new carpark.
The new townhall gardens which has taken 1 2months to repave an existing carpark which must now be taken up because they couldn't open the museum without laying it properly.
The roads and Roy Miller being in charge of the department and failing in the maintenance of Barnsleys roads.
Failing to attract any big businesses to Barnsley apart from minimum wage sweatshop jobs.
Failing to take advantage of our excellent transport links in order to achieve the above.
The constant denial
The lack of communication or transparancy coming from BMBC
Paying above the odds for job roles - 70k for a new marketing manager who will not have any budget to spend and is being paid 14,000 above the average for the job throughout the sector which will also include pension.

It's a shame the nomination didn't come from a Barnsley resident Im sure it would have been most complementary.

Spot on Guesty.

When the original story was announced I don't recall an outpouring of love & appreciation from the ordinary people of Barnsley. And he didn't get the Knighthood because of anything he has done for Barnsley, he got it for political services, i.e. the Labour Party bestowed it on him from their quota of awards.

Well, I agree with Colette ~ Steve Houghton, love him or hate him, but the results in the elections are the results! Someone voted for him and a majority voted for him, hence, you must be the minority... I suggest Guesty, that you start your campaign now and let us see a new face in the Town Hall... pending the democratic voting system. If you get all those who "cannot be bothered" to vote, then you stand a chance... C'mon Guesty, get darn to the Town Hall and get thi name on a polling card... "tha never knows lad, tha might get a knighthood thi sen"... but on other hand, tha might not...

1. I work a 50 hour week so could not give the commitment that the councillor role deserves

2. BMBC is a labour old boys network I would not represent them so therefore regardless of policy a term which has been used time and again on this site is "pin a red rosette on a donkey" would probably mean I wouldn't get elected, you already know about voter apathy in Barnsley

3. If in the unlikely event I did do the above your latter statement would be almost certainly be correct, I wouldn't win a knighthood aImost certainly as serving the people of Barnsley and putting the majority interests first would upset too many of the great and good summat that big Steve never has done, winning his knighthood in a tory government for what he has gained it for quite frankly must be embarrassing to him, it is for me, its like the master giving the little lapdog a treat for being good and rolling over, which funnily enough is exactly what he has done most of the time the condems have been in charge.

They are generally cheap. However, in August and September, they are sold at a discounted price. Therefore, you can buy them at that time and be able to enjoy them for the remainder part of the summer and also in the next summer season.

Strange how Mr Houghtons services to parliament and politics covers the years from 1998 when BMBC first started getting paid to rehouse immigrants/refugees,at the rate of 20 families a month.we the people of Barnsley were never advised or asked if this social experiment was acceptable!,or if it were acceptable that our schools, hospitals, doctors should be asked to cope or that our young people should be put on the bottom of the housing list.Twenty a month for twelve years ,it's an awful lot of families who all had free everything.food,phones,TV,s.furniture,.Well it's for a good political cause, give them things they vote labour and we the people of Barnsley have to pay.
I have to add that some of the refugees were deserving cases but they certainly stretched the social limits of housing and education
All this did not effect our local lads n lasses ,or old people or add to the very poor education levels achieved in the new tin shed schools paid for on the tick by us to the investors in PFI
It did not contribute to the sexual assaults on young girls in and around our area by foreign nationals or indeed the increase in crime levels from the same group,or in one case fraud by the council sponsored
Representatives of those people.
No Steve we cannot blame Bmbc political services for your knighthood but we can ask the question, just why did you get the award and what for?

I've asked this question many times Len and I can only agree in particular your last paragraph.

How does it work when a Labour Councillor gets a Knigthood from the Tories.
