Gay Pride To Be Dedicated To Teenager

Monday July 8 2013

Steven Simpson Steven Simpson

THIS year's Barnsley Gay Pride will be dedicated to Steven Simpson, the gay teenager from Cudworth who died last year after being set on fire at his 18th birthday party.

Organisers from the Barnsley Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Forum were given special permission to dedicate the event to Steven by his mum, Bernadette Simpson.

The Barnsley College student was taunted for his sexuality before suffering 60 per cent burns after a flame was put to his body, which was soaked in tanning oil, at his party last June. He died two days later.

Jordan Sheard, 20, of Darfield Road, Cudworth, was jailed for three-and-a-half years after admitting manslaughter.

However, following a campaign by anti-discrimination pressure groups, Sheard's sentence is to be reviewed by Attorney General, Dominic Grieve.

Gay Pride is on September 1 at Peel Square and Peel Street with about 30 stalls opening at 10am and live music and entertainment on the main stage from at 11am.

That's aweful! There needs to be more open minded people in the world! These days unless your streight, Pretty or follow a trend your classed as a outcast! Its disgraceful & get bullied or treated differently for it

Sorry Tony Wood maybe we should put people like you in a village far away! It doesn't matter if ya, gay, streight or Bisexual! These people are still people! Discriminating against them is wrong!

Barnsley LGBT forum are working hard with the police, council, hospitals and other services to raise the awareness of hate crime towards the LGBT community. There are many places people can report hate crime and the forum offers further support and an ear if people want it.
Barnsley has come a huge step forward over the years and this year will be our 5th Pride and to just goes to show from the response we have had over the years that Barnsley welcomes all.

I am the secretary of the local LGBT forum and we making pride a celebration of Stevens life and raising the awareness of all hate crime and not just the for LGBT community. We all live in Barnsley and want to make it a fun day for everyone and just raise the awareness and try and live and work together as one big community

Being a god fearing Christian, homosexuality is wrong and immoral, the bible says so, but being a broadminded Cawthorne wife swapping resident, I don't mind the benders and buftys so long as they leave me and my wife alone.

Yet again another statement that's wrong. Steven was not taunted for his sexuality, the man that you are all calling sick was/ is his friends and it was a pure accident with lads acting stupid. I am not excusing that this was a stupid act & that poor Steve sadly lost his life but how do you think Jorden feels?!
A young man, having to live with the guilt that through his stupidity he lost one of his friends & was man enough to admit it, (which none of the other cowards that were there did) he's been branded homophobic, he's never had a nasty homophobic bone in his body. We have marched gay prided together, we have holidayed with jordens GAY brother & mixed race partner, we have shared our time to endure meals & days out with jordens GAY brother. we were brought up in an excellent family setting with an open mind to everything, we were taught. Not to discriminate, not to be prejudice, never to judge & always befriend others! We did, still do & we will always! Jorden is not homophobic, Jorden was a 19 year old lad acting with his friends at a party. Jorden is now a 20 year old lad who not only has to live with the guilt of silly actions, he's serving a prison sentence, he's now being branded as a homophobic, sick man ( to put it politely)
My point being you are all entitled to An opinion & you will always have one, but at the end of the day. If Jorden was hi phobic, if Jorden set Steven on fire. As this is insinuating. Then Jorden would have been away for murder, Jorden would not have being found innocent of murder but sentenced in Sheffield crown court after months of investigating, evidence from out working professions; such as, police, csi, paramedics, coroners report etc etc etc! And statements of people that were actually there. But for manslaughter death via horseplay! "A stupid act, that has ruined you're own life"said the judge " but not one found to be Malice or hateful" " a prank gone wrong" " no evidence of bullying or homophobic behaviour". Need I say more?! Jordens niece, 8 days younger than him, brought up together. This act as you're perusing it as though Jorden is a monster, he isn't! Never has been, never will.

it has been reported that gay slurs were written on his body before the incident happened. No one has branded him homophobic but it is a hate crime, they are reviewing the case and his sentence could be increased to reflect that.
The crime, be it accidental or not, is horrific and the sentence should reflect the crime, in this case its very lenient. This is just one example of what happens and just because it may have been an accident that's ok then is it?

and what is YOUR evidence it was a hate crime...WERE YOU THERE...no..do you know jorden cos if ya did yud see he hasnt got 1 hatefull bone in his body.. andhe was stevens friend..check ya facts b4 you open ya trap agen and have some respect for all parties involved..

Reply Posted by Phillip on Tuesday July 2 2013 at 18:56
The evidence is he had homophobic writing written on him...quite overwhelming evidence. He has admitted manslaughter, and there was nothing in my post to suggest I thought he had a hateful bone in his body...but as the report said he admitted his crime. He will always have this to live with and the reason they are looking at his sentence is because it has been called a hate crime.

when a wo young n ad mates round..16 17 ect partied got drunk n woke with allsorts written on my ed or elsewr in lipstick..even 1 eyebrow shaved so wrs the crime in that .. all fun ..jus like stevens party

Writing homosexual slurs on someones body followed by "prank" that went wrong which ended up in a young man losing his life.
The pride event in Stevens name is being backed by his mum and hate crime happens more than people know. Its time to stamp it out

He wasnt the only one with writing on him my little brother was there he had gay boy and a drawing of a dick on his arm they all had it in his this was an accident he wasnt bullied they was his friends at his party my brother helped put the fire out, wile others ran off, im sick of this been made out to be a homophobic attack cause it wasnt, i feel for stevens family and it is awful that a life was lost but the real truth from all witnesses should be said not rumours from lying twats!!

Reply Posted by Karen on Wednesday July 3 2013 at 11:34
so why is the sentence being reviewed and it is being called a hate crime if it was not? Sorry I know it is raw but you dont write homophobic words on someone and then mix oil and a flame because you know what is going to happen.

Reply Posted by amy on Wednesday July 3 2013 at 11:47
Steven put the oil on his self just being drunk they didnt do that and he wasnt tge inly one with writing on him!! Its being reviewed cause alot off people dont thinks its fair him only getting 3years but it was just a accident, imagen jordan being your son would you say he deserves a long sentance for a accident, i know a life was lost but it wasnt intended at all ..and if you knew the truth from the people that wad there you see this wasnt a hate crime at all

Reply Posted by Karen on Wednesday July 3 2013 at 12:02
If he was my son I would expect the sentence to fit the crime and 3 years is too short...a life was lost through this, and you talk about the truth but if there was no truth in it it the question on it would have been thrown out.
From what has been said about pride it is about all hate crimes not just gay ones and Stevens mum is backing it and giving her blessing to use Stevens name so we will never agree on the background to it but hate crimes need stamping out full stop

It is sad what happend to Steven. Pide this year is dedicated to him celabrating his life. As for Jordan's sentence it is for the justice system to decide. I am Jordan regrets what happened and will have to live with it for ever. It has impacted on both families and on the wider community. Arguing will not bring him back or help Jorden. We must all move forward.

I am what i am and what i am needs no excuses. I deal my own deck, sometimes the ace sometimes the duces. Its my world and i want to have a little pride in, my world and its not a place i have to hide in. Your life is a sham, till you can shout out, I AM WHAT I AM.....

What is really sad is that the person who did this, admitted to manslaughter, and only got 3 and a half years? He should've gotten life, because that is what was taken away from this young person, an entire lifetime.....
