Shopper Banned From Town Store

Shopper banned from Iceland at Alhambra Centre Shopper banned from Iceland at Alhambra Centre

A SHOPPER claims he's been banned from a town centre store for telling a young shop assistant that 'she looked nice'.

Owen Morris was booted out of Iceland in the Alhambra Centre for the seemingly innocent comment last month.

But the store manager suggested the customer's remarks were far more serious, although the company refused to provide an official comment.

Mr Morris said: "It's a very trivial reason, all I did was make social chat.

"I've been stabbed in the back for doing nothing but being nice.

"It's political correctness, or feminism, gone mad. All I've given that shop is my custom."

The 43-year-old claims to have asked the female assistant, who he estimated was in her early 20s, if she was watching the FA Cup final later that day, Saturday May 11, before complimenting her appearance.

He says the shop manager then approached him and said he was no longer welcome at the store.

Mr Morris can, however, continue to shop at the other Barnsley branch of Iceland, on Peel Street, where he says he has a 'good rapport' with staff, even sending one a birthday card.

sally, shut the **** up would you, you're obviously a simpleton for that ridiculous comment. what is so wrong with conversing with staff at supermarkets? obviously the manager is a simpleton. if there is some other sinister reason behind it then i apologise, but, saying that, im guessing you're a feminist... or just a really ugly woman that never got any male attention and grew up to resent men. grow the **** up

Listen I suggest you shut your slack mouth at the end of the day its why women think things because of the likings of the weirdo that's done what he's done to knock back a womens mind & at the end of the day women have lots of respect and I know I certianly wouldn't have liked the shit that got said to her said to me grow up your only agreeing cause your probably weird cunts that would do it aswell!

"... But the store manager suggested the customer's remarks were far more serious..." obviously the slime ball didn't just say 'may I say you look lovely today' it was probabily more like 'eeee you've got some reyt nookers, id like to chew darn on them' And is just trying to get sympathy. If the manager has come over to speak to him there and then it cant have been something pleasant or quiet.

Reply Posted by Oh dear.. on Thursday June 27 2013 at 16:01
I'd hold off on the frozen sausage joke, Sally it was quite crap. If people these days are called perverts for just saying "you look nice" then those people need to learn how to take a compliment..

Reply Posted by sam on Thursday June 27 2013 at 16:02
Oh my....what a lot of arguing on a subject no one witnessed first hand. It all depends on the context of how the compliment was paid, did the store assistant feel threatened or intimidated or did she simply over react to a sincere remark? The man obviously isn't seen as a threat by staff at the other store otherwise his birthday card would have been rejected and he would have been told that his behaviour was not acceptable and would not be tolerated. We have, as a society, become so wrapped up in political correcteness that I think sight has been lost on how to build geuine good customer relations. Perhaps a step or two back to the "old days" when a sshop keeper knew all their customers by name and their preferences by heart would be a good thing. And what is so wrong in giving a compliment, as long as it is genuine and meant to bring a smile to someone's otherwise ordinary day?

I feel for the girl who has done this, I work in quality save in town . Owen comes into that shop 3-7 times a day every day of the week! He is an absolute creep he tells me how beautiful I am how I'm so perfect and how great friends we are sorry but the guy doesn't no me to be great friends or to say any of those things to me!! It is uneasy uncomfortable to hear it, in my eyes it is perverted!! I left work on day last week for a bus to find him in the bus station! At first I laughed his visits off but now I think he is a creep he always asks how old I am and if i can drive that is not general chit chat! and If he can say the things to us then I feel sorry for other girls there are 16 years olds who work in town they would not no how to handle it. It's a good thing he's been banned and should be banned from every shop if he continues to be the way he is around staff.

@SAM yes i agree, but the troll who started this was sally with her disgusting mouth

I wasnt going to comment on this because of the comeback that you always get from posting on wab however there is alot more to this than what the newspaper printed..i work in a shop that this man comes in to..he comes in a few times a day and very rarley misses a day..he walks around the shop looking for the younger end female staff and then proceeds to say inapropriate things to them..he speaks about the war and football also and if you tell him that you dont know what hes talking about he will openly ask you if you are thick...he makes inapropriate comments i.e ..your eyes are beautiful ..your one of my best friends to 18/19/20 year old girls who are very intimidated by a 40ish year old man "hanging around them" he only does this to the young girls and thats the issue...if he did this to everyone then it would be just a eccentric customer but its the fact that he singles out the young female staff that makes it dam right creepy.

i also work at a store this man comes into everyday , he follows a certain member of our store round and if she is not there he actually asks other staff members if she is working !!! this is creepy , he even told her he knew when her birthday was and SENT a card to her ...that is not normal its creepy

Reply Posted by Owen Morris on Thursday June 27 2013 at 16:32
Mmmm may I say all you women commenting on this story look nice today

Sally is obviously an insecure women to jump to the conclusion that the man was a perverted old man just for complimenting a woman!? Either that or she is a mentally ill, radical feminist.

I can wager that Sally has had man problems in her life to assume that the man is a pervert just for a compliment. Grow up Sally, you mentally deficient woman.

Tbf this man probs does have a good rapport with staff at the other Iceland store - if he knew when one of them had a birthday coming up he obviously makes conversation... Sometimes people can be alittle strange & this maybe the case, but anyone working in retail should be able to laugh it off

Reply Posted by craig on Thursday June 27 2013 at 16:39
@jamie, i agree mate i work in customer service my self and i know you ahve to have banter with the customers if you cant have that then your in the wrong job.
sounds like sallys a right dick, bet shes single.

Reply Posted by Jessica Barton on Thursday June 27 2013 at 16:45
Sorry Jamie I see where your coming from but for a man who doesn't no girls who he is sending birthday cards to is creepy he has sent birthday card to a member of staff in our store aswell and doesn't no her from Adam.
Maybe people are taking this out of proportion but I have this everyday Owen comes to up me every day and has done now for silly amount of months. Talking about murders and war and in that giant bag he carrying about is news paper cutting and books on murders that have happen which he has presented to me
On two occasions now .

the fact you havent done anything about it says a lot, if its been happening longer and you found it 'inappropriate' then you should have reported it months ago, and if nothing was done about it by your manager then you should have gone to head office, and if still nothing was done then you should have taken it up with a solicitor and then sued the company you work for, for emotion distress/harassment. this is the first i've heard or seen of this so i think what you are saying is more or less shite

Reply Posted by paul on Thursday June 27 2013 at 17:48
This makes me laugh, Owen has been thrown out of loads of shops because he's a nuisance, all female staff get fed up of him stopping them doing their job!!!! He needs to spend less time been a creepy nob head and more time getting jeans that fit!!!

There are two sides to every story and people are allowed their own opinions, it is however a little creepy if a 40 year old man comes up to you and starts commenting on how lovely you look when you dont know him from adam. It's like where i work theres a man thatskin his 50's comes in and calls me 'darling' 'sweetheart' 'gorgeous' and says that i 'look nice' and half of time hes tried to kiss me and other employees on cheek and i feel VERY uncomfortable until i told him that i didnt like it.... Thats all the girl had to tell him not get him banned from the store

Reply Posted by d on Thursday June 27 2013 at 18:25
if hes banned from one shop he'll only go round others. but im sure there are other weirdos in town that are worse than him

Reply Posted by Davey on Thursday June 27 2013 at 18:45
Cant make a sincere compliment to someone these days without being branded a pervert.

Reply Posted by bec on Thursday June 27 2013 at 19:04
Your all quick to jump an defend him but have any of your that are actually experienced having to deal with this creep?! A work at peel street iceland an if he thinks his got a good rappot with us then a dread to think, a couldnt be more rude with him if a tried! He got me a birthday card which a never told him when it was! Actual creep, needs banning from the lot! Us as staff spsh females shouldnt feel like we have to go into the back to avoid him

Reply Posted by pac on Thursday June 27 2013 at 19:37
Everyone commenting but dont know the facts....i know the young lady in question and can assure you his comment was much worse than he is saying. the young lady had never encountered the man before and was upset at such a comment from a stranger, which is why he was banned from the shop, .he has been warned before.
There is banter to be had in this line of work but staff, no matter what their age, should not have to put up with this from a man who obviously has some sort of problem. Get him a carer the weirdo!!

Reply Posted by Tracey on Thursday June 27 2013 at 21:06
While none of us were there so we can not comment on what he did or did not say you have to ask the question have staff previously encouraged him after all how did he know when another member of staffs birthday was without someone telling him?

Reply Posted by Amy Isles on Thursday June 27 2013 at 21:20
I have encountered Owen a few times on the bus on my way to work , he always calls me lady because I refuse to tell him my name , He even gets up and moves to sit next to me and try's to start a conversation , I just put my earphones in and TRY to ingnore him , He is weird and I understand where the girl is coming from

I don't know how all those having a go at Sally and trying to justify the actions of this creep can live with themselves. Don't you have wives and daughters? You need your heads knocking together.

Poor reporting on this one, maybe work on facts rather than just hear say, basic stuff - Barnsley Comical doesn't seem to care for truths these days.

Young girls should not have to put up with being made to feel uncomfortable whether he has problems or not.

Reply Posted by big dick on Friday June 28 2013 at 18:21
The whole point to all these ridiculous
comments is.
If the man has a mental problem he may have certificate to say he has a problem.
Thats why he keeps getting banned rather than locked up.
How come he hasnt been banned from there before.
They dont put people in assylums anymore they dont put people in stocks anymore..
The sop itself is to blame for not training there staff that in life when thousands of people will pass through a shop." you will allways get one thats not a full shilling"
And if you come accross that type this is how you deal with it im not in any defence
because you will find wierd or what you percieve as wierd in every shop in the country. deal with it. the village idiot will allways be there.

Reply Posted by Mike on Friday June 28 2013 at 21:11
So Iceland are to blame for not properly training their staff in dealing with a customer 'that's not the full shilling!!' Really, get real you idiot!! whilst customers expect and deserve excellent customer service shouldn't it be that staff should be allowed to go about their jobs without having a pervert/weirdo/creep like this saying creepy things to them. The girl in question is in her early 20's yet he is 43!! He is only slightly younger than me and I would never dream of approaching a young girl like that whilst she is working to say she looks nice. yes, I would have banter with staff but saying that goes beyond what is classed as banter. I am also the father of the girl he gave the birthday card to in the Peel St branch of Iceland. She never told him when her birthday was, god knows how he found out, she is never nice to him, if she see's him in the store she has to disappear out back to get away from him yet he asks where she is and he belives he has a good rapport with them?? This guy is seriously not all there. Also, if he was ever to make suggestive or lewd comments to my daughter then it just won't be another shop ban he will have to deal with!!!

Reply Posted by big dick on Friday June 28 2013 at 23:04
Well you seem to judge idiots very quickly
perhaps you are an idiot without realising it.
Yes we are trained to deal with them.
And the ones who come to rob with machettes and the druggys that believe they can get away by filling there bags with stuff with the intention of not paying
and weve had girls working at around 20 years old one man comes in every day and farts.fs it and blinds it we have allsorts in i remember a shop /supermarket wher 5x 6ft. men walked in with design made trench coats and emptied every single bar and box of chocolates within 10 seconds.
Whichdo yo believe would be the worst thing to. in a shop stuation . the machette.
The 5 blokes or the village idiot.
You have 2 seconds to answer .
And im not an idiot i got it in one.
And that was an old woman behind the counter

Reply Posted by big dick on Friday June 28 2013 at 23:13
And also you should be able to. do your work without people making your day shit.
"but this doesnt work out there in the real world and in barnsley like any other town.
You have bag snatchers that forced my daughter inlaw to the ground to rob her bag .
Of course it whont happen again because
she learned from her mistake of how she carries her bag.

I can talk to anyone, but it seems now-a-days you can't say a think to anyone you don't know! my Dad used to like going for strolls in Locke Park and just sitting on the benches near the play ground, he has now told be that he is scared to even do that in case they think he is watching children play! Bit of a devil when your old Dad can't even sit and enjoy watching others have fun. The world has gone PC mad!

Ok... Who sends someone they know from a shop a birthday card? If they know them outside of shopping at Iceland fine! But just generally giving someone a birthday card, I think it would be somewhat less weird if it was a small local shop, but Iceland isn't. All seems a bit weird and he sounds a bit overly chatty, glad I don't work in a shop.

Reply Posted by emily on Sunday June 30 2013 at 14:03
I have also worked in a shop where Owen was a regular visitor and I can assure you the comments he makes to young girls including me are innapropriate, he is a lot older and quite intimidating too. My manager was close to barring him from the shop I worked in as I couldn't get any work done due to him following me around..

All are judging this guy but what about the girls they are not inicent in this my husband was a taxi driver all his working career and girls offered him all sorts of sex activity in place of their fare no one should judge anyone till they know the person in person . maybe he was wrong and may not be mentally stable maybe he was just been nice and she took it the wrong way who knows

It's called customer relations, if u carnt deal with the weirdos and there's millions of them around the world then I suggest ur in the wrong job!! Their training should involve working in a town centre pub on a Saturday night then they really would learn how to handle a creep!! Mentality of the stupid political correct society we live in!! I'm surprised she's not put a claim for compensation in.

Where due I sue?

Stop thinking everyone in the world is going to mug/kill/molest you, because if you do, someone will, just out of spite.
