THIS year's Mayor's Parade in Barnsley is set to hail the town's heritage.

So far, 37 groups and organisations have signed up for the town centre parade on July 13.

Among floats will be those from Barnsley FC, South Yorkshire Fire Service and Woodhead Mountain Rescue.

The Northern Classic Car Club and Barnsley Hospital Charity will also have floats, as will schools including Darfield Upperwood, Littleworth Grange, Wilthorpe Primary and Wellgate Primary.

The Barnsley Chronicle Band leads the music with the Frumptarn Guggen Band and special guest band Gassafetza from twin town Schwabisch Gmund.

Businesses like Asda, Holiday Inn, The Entertainer, Barclays Bank, The Alhambra and Tyke Racing are all entering floats, walking groups and vehicles.

The parade starts at 10.30am with entry judging at Upper Courthouse car park and trophy presentations at 11.30am.

The parade moves off at 12noon from Upper Courthouse car park and ends at 1pm. Stalls will be open around Cheapside, May Day Green and Queen Street throughout.

FLOATS???? as in actual floats like there used to be, they made the parade when I was a kid...then they stopped them and just had people walking round and it got boring...hopefully this indicates that the lord mayors parade maybe once again something worth making a trip to town for...but best to not get hopes up...it is Barnsley council organising it after all

Agree if they have proper floats like they did back in the day it will be fab I remember majorettes schools having themed floats it was a great day out I'd love for my kids to enjoy what we used to like you say though it is our council that's organising it so I won't get my hopes up either

Is it only me that thinks that at a time of rockbottom and recession for Barnsley, when the country is taking the micky out of villages like Goldthorpe for bemoaning their past and they are told to shut up and move on, then suddenly we are told to celebrate local history? What's with the new museum and floats like the old days?
Are we suddenly proud of being failed miners? Should we brag about our lack of industry and be chuffed that we have nothing else to talk about?
Perhaps the council need to spend more money on promoting the area as a modern town instead of wasting money on the town hall, a museum that will only interest the elderly and naff statues. What next people campaigning in the town over some injustice or other???????

Make it blast and join The Zombie Run, who will be taking part. You don't have pay to join the parade, just get zombie'd up.
